🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第12話(後半)のノア王とマークの逮捕、報道原稿とインタビュー、そして帰還から七年のあいだに世界と仲間に起きたことから、公の場で使う言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

when the dust settles

意味騒ぎが落ち着いたら

  • When the dust settles though, I think it'll make this a healthier place to live.
  • We'll talk again when the dust settles.

💡 舞い上がった土ぼこりが、地面に降りきったころという形です。later が単に後でなのに対し、when the dust settles は混乱がおさまってから——いま騒ぎの最中だと認めているのが違い。once the dust settles もほぼ同じで、let the dust settle なら「少し寝かせよう」と勧める形になります。

02

be charged with ~

意味〜の罪で訴えられる

  • King Noah, you are hereby charged with illegal production of human clones and solicitation of murder.
  • He was charged with fraud.

💡 その罪を正式に背負わされる形です。be arrested が身柄を取るのに対し、be charged with ~ は罪名が立つ——手続きが一段進んでいるのが違い。with のうしろは罪名か動詞ing(charged with stealing)。be charged with ~ が「〜する役目を負う」になる用法もあり、文脈で分かれます。

03

take ~ into custody

意味〜の身柄を拘束する

  • So, we'll be taking you into custody now.
  • Two men were taken into custody at the scene.

💡 公の手のうちに引き取る形です。arrest ~ が捕まえる動作なのに対し、take ~ into custody は預かる状態へ移す——そのあと保護・勾留が続くのが違い。custody は「保護・監督」でもあり(child custody=親権)、in custody なら「勾留中で」と状態を指します。

04

frown upon ~

意味〜をよく思わない

  • The government frowned upon the idea initially.
  • Latecomers are frowned upon here.

💡 眉をひそめて見る形です。oppose ~ が反対を表明するのに対し、frown upon ~ は空気として嫌われている——禁止まではしていないのが違い。受け身で使うことが多く、誰が嫌がっているかを言わずに済みます。frown on ~ でも同じです。

05

spread like wildfire

意味またたく間に広がる

  • The story of our miraculous return spread like wildfire all over the world.
  • The rumor spread like wildfire.

💡 野火のように、止める間もなく燃え広がる形です。spread quickly がただ速いのに対し、spread like wildfire は手がつけられない——制御を失っているのが違い。うわさ・知らせ・流行が主語になり、よい話にも悪い話にも使えます。

06

press charges

意味被害届を出して訴える

  • None of us wanted to press charges anyway.
  • She decided not to press charges.

💡 被害を受けた側が、訴えを推し進める形です。sue ~ が民事で訴えるのに対し、press charges は刑事の手続き——相手を罪に問うのが違い。against ~ で相手を足せ(press charges against him)、drop the charges なら「訴えを取り下げる」です。

07

take responsibility for ~

意味〜の責任を引き受ける

  • I think that was Charce's way of taking responsibility for what he had done.
  • Someone has to take responsibility for this.

💡 自分の側に引き取る形です。apologize が謝るのに対し、take responsibility for ~ は後始末まで背負う——行動が伴うのが違い。take responsibility for ~ing と動詞ing も置け、be responsible for ~ なら「〜の担当だ/原因だ」と立場の話になります。

08

resonate with ~

意味〜の心に響く

  • That lesson resonated with people all over the planet.
  • Her speech resonated with younger voters.

💡 相手の中にあるものと共鳴して鳴る形です。move ~ が感動させるのに対し、resonate with ~ は受け手の側に下地がある——元から響くものを持っていたのが違い。主語は言葉・作品・考えで、広告・政治・書評の英語で頻出します。

09

be implicated in ~

意味〜に関与していたとされる

  • Including the seven directly implicated in the illegal acts of cloning.
  • Two officials were implicated in the scandal.

💡 その一件に、名前が巻き込まれる形です。be involved in ~ が中立なのに対し、be implicated in ~ は悪事に限られる——疑いが向いているのが違い。有罪が確定したとは言っていないので、報道が慎重に使う語です。

10

意味〜を…までさかのぼって突き止める

  • He had managed to trace our connection back to the secrets of the Vixia Royalty.
  • The fault was traced back to a single line of code.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第12話(後半)の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

過去完了(had + 過去分詞)——ある時点より前を示す

In fact, many scholars had already caught on to the historical inaccuracies.

過去のある一点より、さらに前だと示す形です。過去形が話の現在なのに対し、過去完了はそこから振り返る——基準になる時点が別にあるのが違い。その基準は文中になくてもよく、前の文が示していれば足ります。already / never / by then と相性がよく、「そのときすでに」という含みを一語で出せます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Not long after + 主語 + 動詞, ~(〜して間もなく)

Not long after he was crowned king, he relinquished all of his political power.

二つのできごとの間隔が短いと示す形です。After ~ が前後だけを言うのに対し、Not long after ~ は「あまり間を置かずに」——速さに意味を持たせているのが違い。うしろには文も名詞も置けます(Not long after the war, ~)。Shortly after ~ / Soon after ~ とほぼ同じで、年表を語る文でよく使われます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

determine (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜だと判断する)

They determined his actions were the result of severe brainwashing.

調べたうえで、そうだと結論づける形です。think が思うのに対し、determine は調査や審議を経ている——公の判断なのが違い。that は落とせます。determine + 疑問詞節も同じ型で使え(determine whether it was safe)、報告書・判決・調査記事の中心的な動詞です。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

when the dust settles

⭐ アストラの秘密が世に出れば世界は荒れる、と認めたうえでの一言。舞い上がった土ぼこりが、地面に降りきったころ——という形です。later が「あとで」と時間だけを言うのに対し、when the dust settles は「混乱がおさまってから」——いままさに騒ぎの最中だと認めるところまで含むのが違います。だから、もめごと・組織改編・引っ越しのあとで出てきやすく、Let's revisit this when the dust settles.(落ち着いたら、また話しましょう)のように結論を先送りする一言として便利です。once the dust settles でも同じで、let the dust settle と他動詞にすれば「少し寝かせよう」と勧める側に回れます。settle は「沈んで落ち着く」——この一語が絵を作っています。
