🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

rise to the occasion

  • I'm sure you'll all rise to the occasion.
  • She rose to the occasion and finished it alone.

02

at random

  • These groups were selected at random.
  • We picked ten names at random.

a を付けない(× at a random)。

03

be assigned with ~

  • Each team is assigned with a unique task.
  • We were assigned with the hardest section.

04

the vastness of space

  • Feel the vastness of space, and most importantly, have a good time.
  • You can't grasp the vastness of space from a photo.

the vastness of + 名詞 の形で、the ocean / the desert / the problem にも使えます。

05

be in charge of ~ing

  • Basically, he'd be in charge of rounding everyone up?
  • She's in charge of scheduling the interviews.

do the work が作業なのに対し、be in charge of ~ は「決める権限がある」——手を動かすとは限らないのが違い。of のうしろは名詞か動詞ing(× in charge to round)。

06

nominate oneself for ~

  • Me! I nominate myself for the position!
  • He nominated himself for the role.

07

permanently lock in ~

  • I think you're still a bit young to permanently lock in what's best for you personally.
  • Don't permanently lock in the price this early.

08

carry out one's wishes

  • Maybe I'm just trying to carry out his wishes.
  • We carried out her wishes to the letter.

carry out an order / a plan / a study

09

an uncharted star

  • Then I'll discover an uncharted star.
  • They sailed into uncharted waters.

10

repay one's kindness

  • Just hold on and I'll give you a little something to repay your kindness.
  • I've been looking for a way to repay your kindness.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

may or may not have + 過去分詞(〜したかもしれないし、していないかもしれない)

I may or may not have accidentally knocked out this thief.

I knocked him out.

PATTERN 2

it couldn't hurt to + 動詞の原形(〜しておいて損はない)

But I thought it couldn't hurt to go ahead and throw my candidacy out there early.

It's a good idea to ~ が積極的な推奨なのに対し、it couldn't hurt to ~ は「損はしない」——控えめに勧める・軽く言い訳する言い方。 can't hurt / couldn't hurt

PATTERN 3

What made you want to + 動詞の原形?(どうして〜しようと思ったの?)

So what made you wanna volunteer for it?

Why did you ~? が理由を直接聞くのに対し、What made you ~? make + 人 + 動詞の原形なのでto は want の to だけ(× what made you to want)。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

rise to the occasion

I know you'll rise to the occasion.(あなたなら応えてくれると思っています)のように使えます。

この 上級版 では、rise to the occasion / at random / be assigned with ~ / be in charge of ~ing / carry out one's wishes のような段取りを告げる・役目を渡す言い回しを中心に据えました。

may or may not have ~(〜したかもしれない)、it couldn't hurt to ~(〜しておいて損はない)、What made you want to ~?(どうして〜しようと?)——とぼける・段取る・きっかけを聞く型が並んでいます。

may or may not have ~ / it couldn't hurt to ~ / What made you want to ~?
