Episode Summary

The sphere spits Team B-5 out into open space, where they reach an empty ship. Aries drifts away with a dead suit and Kanata goes out on a cable to bring her back, unhooking himself when the line runs short. Once aboard, Zack works out that they are 5,012 light years from home with three days of water. The group finally introduces itself, plots a route across five planets, and names the ship Astra.

on the verge of ~ / be next to none / stay on course

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

on the verge of ~

  • Sure, knock yourself out, I mean, we're only on the verge of death here.
  • The company was on the verge of collapse.

be close to ~ が距離なのに対し、on the verge of ~ は「落ちる直前」——切迫しているのが違い。of のうしろは名詞か動詞ing(on the verge of tears / of giving up)。悪いことに使うのが基本ですが、on the verge of a breakthrough のように好転にも使えます。

02

be next to none

  • The chance of being rescued is next to none.
  • Demand for it is next to none.

be very low が程度なのに対し、be next to none は「無いのと変わらない」——望みを断つ言い方。next to impossible / next to nothing も同じ作りで、next to のうしろに極端な語を置きます。

03

stay on course

  • As long as we stay on course, we're fine.
  • The project is staying on course.

go off course が反対で「それる」。

04

stock up on ~

  • But if we go to that planet, then it'll give us the chance to stock up on food and water.
  • We stocked up on batteries before the storm.

on を落とさない(× stock up food)。

05

the next leg of the journey

  • And then we use that one to forage enough food and water for the next leg of the journey.
  • We'll refuel before the next leg of the journey.

the first leg / the final leg

06

keep each other going

  • There were times we wanted to give up. But we kept each other going.
  • The two of them kept each other going all winter.

help each other が手を貸し合うのに対し、keep each other going は「気持ちを切らさせない」——長期戦が前提。

07

embrace the unknown

  • Well, he is embracing the unknown!
  • Good research means embracing the unknown.

08

dress ~ up

  • There's no need to dress it all up and make it look fancy.
  • Don't dress it up — just tell me the number.

目的語は間にも後ろにも置けます(dress it up / dress up the numbers)。

09

one ~ at a time

  • We can do it. We'll make it. One planet at a time.
  • Let's fix this one problem at a time.

one day at a time

10

lighten the load

  • No problem! We can just lighten the load of the ship, right?
  • Hiring someone would lighten the load a bit.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

We don't actually know where the sphere is located. Much less how to find it again.

and also が並べるのに対し、much less は「そこまで届くはずがない」——前が否定文であることが条件です(× We know it, much less ~)。

PATTERN 2

If we hadn't, we would have died instantly.

If we didn't, we would die.

PATTERN 3

If there's not a way to fly this ship back home, then it might as well be a big, fancy coffin!

A might as well be B なら「A は B も同然」——言い切らずに強くけなせます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

on the verge of ~

They were on the verge of giving up.(あと少しで諦めるところだった)のように使えます。of のうしろは名詞か動詞ing——to は取りません(× on the verge to give up)。tears / collapse / bankruptcy / war と並ぶのが定番で、on the verge of a breakthrough のように好転する直前にも使えます。

この 上級版 では、on the verge of ~ / be next to none / stay on course / stock up on ~ / keep each other going のような見通しを語る言い回しを中心に据えました。

much less ~(ましてや〜など)、If S had ~, S would have ~(あのとき〜していたら)、might as well ~(いっそ〜も同然)——切り捨てる・悔やむ・投げやりに言う型が並んでいます。

much less ~ / If S had ~, S would have ~ / might as well ~ まで扱う、上級者向けの第1話後半です。
