  • Look, patrol bots. Spaceport security sure is on the ball.
  • The new assistant is really on the ball.

the を落とさない(× on ball)。

04

weird ~ out

  • Besides, little kids really weird me out.
  • That painting weirds me out.

目的語は間に置く(weirds me out)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

I can't believe (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜なんて信じられない)

Oh, no, my passport! I can't believe I almost forgot it!

I'm surprised that ~ が落ち着いた報告なのに対し、I can't believe ~ はその場の叫び——感情が乗るのが違い。

PATTERN 2

I wish I had ~(〜

I have to admit, I'm a little jealous, I wish I had a sibling so I could be as close as you two are.

現在のことなのに動詞は過去形(× I wish I have)。 I wish I had had ~ ともう一段ずらします。

PATTERN 3

There's no way + 主語 + 動詞(〜なんてありえない)

Why should we take care of her? There is no way this is safe!

It isn't safe. No way!

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

read a room

He really can't read a room.(あの人、本当に空気が読めない)のように言います。

この 中級版 では、read a room / be on the ball / Don't hold your breath. / weird ~ out / an easy target

I can't believe ~(〜なんて信じられない)、I wish I had ~(〜があればなあ)、There's no way ~(〜なんてありえない)——仮定法がなぜ過去形になるのかも、ここで押さえられます。

I can't believe ~ / I wish I had ~ / There's no way ~ まで扱う、中級者向けの第1話前半です。
