Episode Summary

Odokawa, a walrus cabbie who can't sleep and can't quite connect, ferries Tokyo's night crowd — a college kid desperate to go viral, a comedy duo arguing on the radio, a nurse who tips too much information — while the news repeats one story: a high school girl has gone missing in Nerima. A detective wants his dash cam footage, a gangster named Dobu wants a word, and everyone seems to think the odd driver knows more than he says.

go viral / come up with ~ / pop into one's head / hold ~ back

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

go viral

  • I'm trying to go viral.
  • The clip went viral overnight.

go の過去形は went(went viral)。

02

come up with ~

  • When I'm asked a question, I come up with about five possible answers.
  • We need to come up with a better name.

up with を離さないこと(× come with up)。

03

pop into one's head

  • I bet you respond quickly with what pops into your head without considering the answer.
  • Her name just popped into my head.

come to mind とほぼ同じですが、pop into one's head のほうが「不意に」が強い。 (An idea popped into my head.)。

04

hold ~ back

  • You're the one holding us back, you know.
  • Don't let fear hold you back.

代名詞は back の前(hold us back)。

05

move on to ~

  • Anyway, let's just move on to our next segment.
  • Let's move on to the next item.

06

blur out ~

  • Shouldn't you blur out the faces or something?
  • They blurred out the license plates.

07

splurge for ~

  • Splurging for a taxi after work, huh?
  • We splurged for the good seats.

08

make good money

  • Nurses must make good money.
  • You can make good money doing translations.

earn a lot が事実の描写なのに対し、make good money は会話の言い方——職業の話でよく出ます。

09

list ~ off

  • What are some of the benefits of marrying you? Then list them off.
  • She listed off five reasons on the spot.

代名詞は off の前(list them off)。

10

set ~ up

  • Telling you we were set up.
  • He claims he was set up by his partner.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Would you mind ~ing?(〜

Hey, driver, would you mind taking a selfie?

No(No, not at all.=いやじゃないですよ)——Yes と答えると断ったことになるのが最大の落とし穴。mind のうしろは必ず ~ing(× mind to take)。Would you mind not ~ing? Would you mind not saying that ...

PATTERN 2

I bet +

I bet you get some cute passengers sometimes though, right?

I think より強く、I'm sure よりくだけた位置。 I bet.

PATTERN 3

Why don't you ask me that question anyway?

You should ~ が上からの助言なのに対し、Why don't you ~? Why don't we ~?

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

go viral

go の過去形は went(went viral)。
