Episode Summary

The last episode opens with a child's notebook: a boy who cannot look people in the eye, who is happiest at the zoo, and who remembers the night of the accident as a good one. Years later a doctor finally gives the condition a name. The arrests are announced, debts are settled in unexpected ways, and a taxi pulls up to the curb with the same question it always asks.

keep ~ at bay / proclaim one's innocence / put the cart before the horse

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

keep ~ at bay

  • Evil can't be eradicated. But I can keep it at bay and maintain the peace.
  • Two coffees keep the headache at bay.

02

be brought in for questioning

  • She had been brought in for questioning in connection to the murder.
  • Two men were brought in for questioning.

be arrested が逮捕なのに対し、be brought in for questioning は「事情聴取」——身柄の扱いが違うのが要点。

03

proclaim one's innocence

  • She is denying the charges and continues to proclaim her innocence.
  • He proclaimed his innocence from the first day.

04

put the cart before the horse

  • Talk about putting the cart before the horse.
  • Designing the logo first is putting the cart before the horse.

be wrong が間違いなのに対し、put the cart before the horse は「順番の話」——中身は正しくても順序が違うのが要点。

05

criticize ~ for …

  • I'm not here to criticize you for that.
  • They criticized him for staying silent.

for のうしろは名詞か ~ing(× criticize him to stay)。I'm not here to ~ と組むと「そのために来たのではない」と前置きできます。

06

upstage ~

  • A car is upstaging me.
  • The opening act upstaged the headliner.

07

get one's story straight

  • The police will keep questioning us, so we need to get our story straight.
  • Get your story straight before you call them.

(Let me get my story straight.)、そのときは中立です。

08

be better off

  • Everyone said they felt sorry for me. I didn't get it. I was better off than I was before.
  • You'd be better off taking the train.

be better off + ~ing で「〜したほうがいい」という助言になり(× better off to take)、be worse off が反対側です。

09

look after ~

  • One day a tapir showed up and said he'd look after me from now on.
  • Could you look after the shop for an hour?

10

retrieve ~

  • The police retrieved the money that fell into the ocean from the trunk of your cab.
  • We retrieved the file from the backup.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Nor is it ~(〜でもない)

That's not my place. Nor is it my job to do so.

(Nor is it ~、× Nor it is)。And it isn't either.

PATTERN 2

A fairly rare condition known as visual agnosia, caused by executive dysfunction.

which is known as ~ の which is が落ちた形と考えると成り立ちが見えます。a condition called ~ はもっと会話寄り、known as のほうが専門的。

PATTERN 3

Not only did + 主語 + 動詞の原形, but …(〜しただけでなく)

Not only did I fail to save his daughter, but my subordinates were involved.

第8話で扱った Not only is ~ は be 動詞版で、こちらは一般動詞版——did を主語の前に出し、動詞は原形に戻すのが型です(did I fail、× did I failed)。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

keep ~ at bay

Exercise keeps the stress at bay. at bay は冠詞なしで固定(× at a bay)。
