Episode Summary
The last episode opens with a child's notebook: a boy who cannot look people in the eye, who is happiest at the zoo, and who remembers the night of the accident as a good one. Years later a doctor finally gives the condition a name. The arrests are announced, debts are settled in unexpected ways, and a taxi pulls up to the curb with the same question it always asks.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- I'm always told to look people in the eye when I talk to them, but I'm scared to.
- Look me in the eye and say that.
look at one's eyes とは言わず、look + 人 + in the eye の語順が決まり(look me in the eye)。
- Being around them makes me anxious and uncomfortable.
- Crowds make me anxious.
- Everyone at my school is mean. They tease me, hit me and laugh at me.
- Don't tease your brother.
- They even make fun of the way I cry.
- Nobody's making fun of you.
of を落とさないのがこの句の要(× make fun him)。
- Since dad never comes home, she's always annoyed and takes it out on me.
- Don't take it out on the staff.
it は言わなくても伝わる不満を指し、この it を別の語に替えません(× take anger out on)。
06
never get tired of ~ing
- I never get tired of looking at that encyclopedia.
- I never get tired of this view.
- I think dad doesn't bring mom along on purpose.
- She left it there on purpose.
by mistake(うっかり)が正反対。
- Man, we sure got roped into this one.
- I got roped into helping them move.
- You got to do whatever it takes to make your dreams come true.
- I'll do whatever it takes to finish this.
この it takes は「それに要する」の意味で、whatever it takes だけでも通じます(Whatever it takes.)。
10
put ~ away for a rainy day
- It couldn't hurt to put it away for a rainy day.
- Put some of it away for a rainy day.
save ~ for a rainy day の形もよく使われ、a を落とさないのが決まりです。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Next year will be our last year. Won't you reconsider?
Will you ~? Won't you join us?(ぜひご一緒に)のように、丁寧な勧誘としても使われます。
- Won't you stay a little longer?(もう少しいてくれませんか)
- Won't you at least think about it?(せめて考えてみてくれませんか)
PATTERN 2
Unlike +
Unlike at school, I don't really cry at home.
unlike は前置詞なのでうしろは名詞(× Unlike I am at school)。
- Unlike last year, we started early.(去年とは違って、早めに始めた)
- Unlike me, she reads the manual.(私と違って、彼女は説明書を読む)
PATTERN 3
When I think about returning to the world outside the zoo, it makes me want to stay here forever.
It makes me want to ~ は「そう思わされる」——きっかけのほうを主語にできます。to は want のうしろだけ(× makes me to want)。
- That song makes me want to cry.(あの曲を聴くと泣きたくなる)
- The photos make me want to go back.(写真を見ると、また行きたくなる)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
look ~ in the eye
- Look me in the eye and say that.
- He couldn't look her in the eye.
- She looked him in the eye and apologized.
語順に注意——look + 人 + in the eye で、look me in the eye(× look at my eyes)。 Look me in the eye and tell me you didn't.
