Episode Summary
The hand-off goes exactly as planned — right up until a patrol car pulls the van over and the cases turn out to be full of newspaper. On stage, a comedy duo does a time-machine bit about regret and means every word of it. And on a quiet street, a man in a skull mask finally explains what was taken from him sixteen years ago, and what he wants instead of revenge.

意味どうぞご遠慮なく
- I did just check earlier, but please, by all means.
- By all means, take a look.
💡 あらゆる手段を使ってでも——そこから「どうぞ存分に」になった形です。Sure. が軽い承諾なのに対し、By all means. は「もちろんどうぞ」——ひと押し強いのが違い。文頭でコンマ、または単独で使えます。by no means(決して〜でない)は正反対の意味なので、混同しないように。
意味本物
- They're definitely the real deal.
- I've heard the demo — she's the real deal.
💡 本物の取引——まがい物ではないという言い方です。genuine が形容詞なのに対し、the real deal は名詞のかたまり——be 動詞のうしろに丸ごと置けるのが便利。物にも人にも使え、人に使うと「実力が本物」という褒め言葉になります。the が付くのが決まりです。
意味〜に容赦なく罰を下す
- If you even think about betraying me now, I'll come down on you with every last thing I've got.
- The regulator came down on them hard.
💡 上から重く落ちてくるという絵です。punish が罰することなのに対し、come down on ~ は「全力で潰しにかかる」——力の差が前提にあります。come down on ~ hard の形が定番。come down on the side of ~ なら「〜の側に立つ」と別の意味になります。
04
get revenge on ~ for …
意味…のことで〜に復讐する
- I wanted to get revenge on him for taking that from me.
- He spent years getting revenge on them for nothing.
💡 復讐を手に入れる——やり返すという形です。punish が罰なのに対し、get revenge は「私的な仕返し」——正義とは無関係なのが違い。on のうしろは相手、for のうしろは理由。take revenge on ~ も同じで、get one's revenge と所有格を入れる形もあります。
意味〜を…と引き比べる
- I know I've already harassed him plenty, but it's difficult to measure against all I've lost.
- You can't measure this against last year.
💡 ものさしを当てて比べるという形です。compare が並べて見ることなのに対し、measure ~ against … は「基準に照らす」——片方が物差しになります。成果・損失・約束と相性がよく、measure up to ~ なら「〜に見合う」。
06
have a guilty conscience
意味やましいところがある
- You lied because you have a guilty conscience.
- Only someone with a guilty conscience deletes that.
💡 conscience は良心——それが痛んでいる状態です。feel bad が気持ちなのに対し、a guilty conscience は「後ろ暗さを抱えている」——隠しているのが前提。a を付けて数えるのが型で、a clear conscience(やましさがない)が反対側です。
意味〜をだまして…を巻き上げる
- You're the one who conned me out of 100,000 yen 16 years ago.
- They conned her out of her savings.
💡 con はconfidence trick(信用詐欺)の略です。steal が奪うことなのに対し、con ~ out of … は「信じさせて出させる」——相手が自分から渡すのが違い。out of のうしろは奪われたもの。a con man(詐欺師)、a con(詐欺)も同じ語です。
意味強がる
- I know you don't have any bullets left. Don't try to act tough.
- He acts tough but he's terrified.
💡 強い側を演じるという形です。be brave が実際の勇気なのに対し、act tough は「そう見せているだけ」——中身が伴っていないという含み。act + 形容詞は「〜のようにふるまう」の型で、act cool / act innocent / act surprised と広げられます。
意味〜に追いつく
- It finally caught up to you.
- The workload finally caught up to him.
💡 追いかけて並ぶという形です。reach が到達なのに対し、catch up to ~ は「差を詰めて追いつく」——離れていたのが前提。報いや無理が「追いついてくる」という使い方もでき(作中はこちら)、catch up with ~ はほぼ同じ意味です。
意味〜として思いやりを欠く
- As a taxi driver, I think that was inconsiderate of me.
- It was inconsiderate of him to reply that way.
💡 相手のことを考えていないという形です。be rude が失礼なのに対し、be inconsiderate は「気が回らなかった」——悪意はないのが違い。It was inconsiderate of + 人 + to + 動詞の原形 がいちばん使う形で、of のうしろが「その人らしくない」と評価される仕組みです。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第12話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
There's no telling what + 主語 + 動詞(何が起きるか分からない)
I think we should leave this place first. There's no telling what might happen.
まずここを離れたほうがいい。何が起きるか分かったものじゃない。
telling は「言い当てること」——誰にも言い当てられないという形です。I don't know ~ が自分の無知なのに対し、There's no telling ~ は「誰にも分からない」——不確かさそのものを主語に立てます。what / how / when / who と疑問詞を替えられ、うしろは平叙の語順(what might happen)。危険や見通しの悪さを言うときの定番です。
他にも使える例:
- There's no telling how long it'll take.(どれくらいかかるか分かりません)
- There's no telling who saw it.(誰が見たか分かったものではない)
PATTERN 2
Wouldn't it ~ if + 主語 + 過去形?(〜したら…になってしまうのでは)
Wouldn't it ruin everything if you got shot here?
ここで撃たれたら、全部台なしになるんじゃないのか。
仮定法過去を疑問文にして、相手を止める形です。Don't do that. が命令なのに対し、Wouldn't it ~ if ~? は「そうなると困るのでは?」——判断を相手に返すので、指図に聞こえません。would と過去形をそろえるのが型。否定疑問なので、答えるときは中身で受けるのが安全(Yes / No より You're right.)。止めたいが命令したくない場面にぴったりです。
他にも使える例:
- Wouldn't it be easier if we split it?(分けたほうが楽なのでは)
- Wouldn't it look odd if we left now?(今出たら不自然に見えませんか)
PATTERN 3
the very same ~ who …(ほかならぬ、あの…した人物)
Which means they are the very same person who conned me out of 100,000 yen 16 years ago.
つまりそいつは、16年前に私から十万円を巻き上げた、まさにその人物だということだ。
very が「まさにその」——the same を強める働きをします。the same person は「同じ人」ですが、the very same person は「ほかならぬその人」——驚きや因縁が乗ります。who / that で説明を続け、the very same day / place / word と名詞を替えて応用できます。結論を突きつける一文を作るのに向いた型です。
他にも使える例:
- That's the very same shop we went to.(まさにあのとき行った店だ)
- It happened on the very same day.(それがまったく同じ日に起きた)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
con ~ out of …
「〜をだまして…を巻き上げる」
- They conned her out of her savings.
- He was conned out of two months' rent.
- Nobody cons me out of anything twice.
⭐ 十六年越しの因縁が、一言で名指しされる場面から。con はconfidence trick(信用詐欺)の略——信じ込ませて出させるのが芯にあります。steal が「奪う」のに対し、con ~ out of … は「相手が自分から渡してしまう」——被害者が納得して手放しているところが決定的な違いで、だからこそ、あとで気づいたときの悔しさが深い。out of のうしろが奪われたもの(conned me out of my savings)。a con man(詐欺師)、a con(詐欺)、con artist(詐欺のプロ)——どれも同じ con です。ニュースでも小説でも頻出する語なので、この一語を押さえると詐欺まわりの英語がまとめて読めます。
