Episode Summary
The hand-off goes exactly as planned — right up until a patrol car pulls the van over and the cases turn out to be full of newspaper. On stage, a comedy duo does a time-machine bit about regret and means every word of it. And on a quiet street, a man in a skull mask finally explains what was taken from him sixteen years ago, and what he wants instead of revenge.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions | 各解説つき
〈中級〉第12話の職務質問と漫才の場面から、そのまま口から出る言い方を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。
意味車を路肩に寄せて止める
- You in the black van, pull over to the left side of the road.
- Pull over here — I'll get out.
💡 脇へ寄せる——車を道の端に止めるという形です。stop が止まることなのに対し、pull over は「道をあけて止める」——場所の指定が入ります。目的語なしで使えるのがふつうで、警察が止めるときの決まり文句。pull up は「(目的地に)横づけする」で別物です。
意味急いでいる
- We're kind of in a hurry.
- Sorry, I'm in a hurry.
💡 急ぎの中にいるという形です。be fast が速さなのに対し、be in a hurry は「時間がない」——状況のほうを言います。kind of を足すと角が取れ(kind of in a hurry=ちょっと急いでいて)、断りや催促をやわらげられます。in a rush はほぼ同じ意味です。
03
keep the meter running
意味メーターを回したままにする
- But I'm going to keep the meter running the whole time, okay?
- He kept the meter running while we waited.
💡 計器を動かし続ける——料金が加算され続ける状態です。wait が待つことなのに対し、keep the meter running は「待ち時間も料金のうち」——お金の話が入ります。keep + 目的語 + ~ing(〜させ続ける)の型で、keep the engine running(エンジンをかけたままにする)も同じ形です。
意味誤解を解く
- It's fine. Let's just clear this up.
- Let me clear that up before we go on.
💡 もやを晴らす——はっきりさせるという形です。explain が説明なのに対し、clear ~ up は「食い違いをなくす」——誤解があるのが前提。目的語は up の前(clear it up)。天気が晴れる意味でも使い(It cleared up.)、体調が治るにも使えます。
意味〜をしくじる
- Got it. And don't screw it up.
- I screwed up the order.
💡 ねじ曲げて台なしにするという絵です。fail が失敗なのに対し、screw ~ up は「自分のせいで壊した」——責任が自分にあるのが含み。やや乱暴な口語なので、職場なら mess ~ up のほうが無難。目的語は up の前で、a screw-up なら「へま」という名詞です。
意味時間をさかのぼる
- There's something they regret, so they go back in time to fix it.
- If I could go back in time, I'd say yes.
💡 時間の中を戻るという形です。remember が思い出すことなのに対し、go back in time は「本当に戻る」——物語や仮定の話で使います。in time であって× go back to time ではない点に注意。go back to + 年や場面なら「その時点に戻る」と言えます。
意味放っておいてくれ
- Just leave me alone.
- I'm fine — just leave me alone.
💡 ひとりのままにしておいてくれという形です。Go away. が「あっちへ行け」なのに対し、Leave me alone. は「かまわないでくれ」——その場にいてもいいのが違い。Just が付くともう言葉を交わしたくないという響きになります。leave ~ alone は物にも使え(Leave it alone.=触るな)。
08
a long list of regrets
意味後悔の山
- My life has a long list of regrets.
- He left behind a long list of regrets.
💡 長い一覧になるほどあるという形です。many regrets が数なのに対し、a long list of ~ は「並べたら止まらない」——誇張のニュアンスが入ります。a long list of complaints / excuses / questions と名詞を替えて応用でき、regret は数えられる名詞として複数形にします。
意味落ち着いたままでいる
- The police might be at the parking lot, but stay calm.
- Stay calm and read the whole thing.
💡 落ち着いた状態を保つという形です。calm down が「落ち着け」なのに対し、stay calm は「そのまま乱さないで」——まだ取り乱していないのが前提。stay + 形容詞は「〜のままでいる」の型で、stay safe / stay quiet / stay awake と広がります。
意味得意ではない
- I'm not the best with words, so this kind of thing isn't really my forte.
- Small talk isn't my forte.
💡 forte は強み・得意分野——フランス語由来の語です。be bad at ~ が下手なのに対し、not be one's forte は「専門ではない」——やわらかく断れるのが利点。my / his / her と所有格を付けるのが型。音楽の forte(強く)とはつづりが同じですが、この意味では「フォルテイ」とも読みます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第12話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。
PATTERN 1
Would it be all right if + 主語 + 過去形?(〜してもよろしいでしょうか)
Would it be all right if we checked the contents?
中身を確認させていただいてもよろしいですか。
いちばん丁寧な許可の求め方のひとつです。Can I ~? が直接、Is it all right if ~? が中間で、Would it be all right if ~? がいちばん低姿勢。if 節を過去形にすることで距離を作ります(if we checked)——現在形でも通じますが、過去形のほうが丁寧。接客・訪問・取材にそのまま使え、作中もいちばん改まった相手に使っています。
他にも使える例:
- Would it be all right if I sat here?(ここに座ってもよろしいですか)
- Would it be all right if we started early?(早めに始めてもよろしいですか)
PATTERN 2
Judging by ~, …(〜から見るに)
Judging by my son's behavior, I'm clearly gonna die.
息子の様子から見るに、私は間違いなく死ぬな。
目の前の手がかりから結論を引く形です。Because ~ が理由なのに対し、Judging by ~ は「これを根拠にすると」——推測だと断っているのが違い。by のうしろは名詞(× judging by he said)。Judging from ~ も同じ意味で使われ、文頭でコンマが定位置。表情・音・数字など、見えているものを根拠にするときに便利です。
他にも使える例:
- Judging by the sky, it'll rain.(空模様から見るに、雨になりそうだ)
- Judging by his face, he already knew.(顔つきから見るに、彼はもう知っていた)
PATTERN 3
I shouldn't have + 過去分詞(〜するべきではなかった)
I regret becoming a comedian. I shouldn't have chased my stupid dreams.
芸人になったことを後悔している。あんな夢を追うべきじゃなかった。
過ぎたことへの後悔を表す形です。I didn't want to ~ が当時の気持ちなのに対し、I shouldn't have ~ は「今から振り返って」——結果を知ったうえでの判断。should have + 過去分詞なら「〜すべきだった(のにしなかった)」——否定の位置で意味が反転します。会話では shouldn't've と縮めて発音され、聞き取りの難所でもあります。
他にも使える例:
- I shouldn't have said that.(あんなことを言うべきではなかった)
- You should have told me.(言ってくれればよかったのに)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
pull over
「車を路肩に寄せて止める」
- Pull over here — I'll get out.
- The officer told us to pull over.
- Can you pull over at the corner?
⭐ 職務質問の場面で、いちばん最初に飛んでくる一言。脇へ寄せる——車を道の端に止めるという形です。stop が「止まる」のに対し、pull over は「道をあけて、端に寄せて止める」——場所の指定まで含むのが違いです。目的語なしでそのまま使えるのがふつうで、Pull over. だけで通じます。警察が車を止めるときの決まり文句でもあり、be pulled over と受け身にすると「(警察に)止められる」——I got pulled over last night. は「ゆうべ警察に止められた」。pull up は「目的地に横づけする」、pull out は「(車の流れに)出ていく」——この三つは車の英語の基本セットです。
