Episode Summary
Four high schoolers spend an entire episode arguing about how to eat things — which end of a chocolate cornet is the head, when to eat the strawberry on a shortcake, whether mayonnaise belongs on curry, and why you must never flip beef tongue on the grill. In between, someone explains the difference between a cold and the flu, and someone else visits a sick friend and mostly copies her homework.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
01
share many common traits
- But then again, colds and flus do share many common traits.
- The two systems share many common traits.
- Those are just a few of the symptoms that differ from the flu.
- This model differs from the previous one.
💡 be different from ~ の動詞版です。
03
a scaled-up version of ~
- I guess one could say a flu is sort of a scaled up version of a cold.
- It's a scaled-up version of last year's event.
- Oh, it's nothing. Just something that's been bugging me.
- Something about that email is bugging me.
(It's been bugging me.)、Stop bugging me.
05
appreciate the thought
- I appreciate the thought, but I'd feel terrible if you caught this thing.
- I appreciate the thought, but I've already eaten.
Thank you.
- Perhaps the bit with the homework was her attempt at cheering you up.
- That was his attempt at an apology.
her way of ~ing が「やり方」なのに対し、her attempt at ~ing は「そのつもりだった」——結果は伴っていないという含みが出ます。at のうしろは名詞か ~ing(× attempt to cheering)。
- I wonder if he's all right, though. Being all cooped up down there like that.
- Don't get cooped up in the office all day.
ほぼ受け身の形で使い、be / get / feel cooped up のどれも可。
- But by the looks of his login info, he's been playing the game nonstop.
- By the looks of it, they're closed.
By the looks of it, がいちばんよく使う形で、from the looks of ~ も同じ意味です。
- Why does everything you talk about revert back to gaming?
- The conversation reverted back to money.
- You are referred to as a super idol by everyone, including yourself.
- The area is referred to as the old town.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
can't help + 動詞ing(つい〜してしまう)
Maybe she was trying not to wake you up, but couldn't help noticing you as you slept.
うしろは必ず ~ing(× can't help to notice)。can't help but + 動詞の原形 も同じ意味で、こちらは原形——二つの形をごちゃ混ぜにしないのが要点です。
- I couldn't help laughing.(つい笑ってしまった)
- I can't help but wonder why.(なぜなのか、どうしても気になってしまう)
PATTERN 2
one could say (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜と言ってもいいかもしれない)
I guess one could say a flu is sort of a scaled up version of a cold.
- One could say it was inevitable.(避けられなかったとも言えます)
- You could say we got lucky.(運がよかったとも言えますね)
PATTERN 3
I never would have thought of it that way.
(I would never have thought)。
- I would have called, but I lost your number.(電話したかったが番号をなくした)
- Anyone would have done the same.(誰だって同じようにしたでしょう)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
appreciate the thought
- I appreciate the thought, but I've already eaten.
- I appreciate the thought — really.
- She appreciated the thought more than the gift.
Thank you.
