Episode Summary

On his way home from a convenience store, high-schooler Subaru Natsuki is pulled out of Tokyo and dropped into the capital of Lugunica. His phone still works but buys nothing, the fruit seller writes him off as a freeloader, and three thugs corner him in an alley. A silver-haired girl and her cat-shaped spirit drive them off, heal his wounds, and let him tag along: she is hunting the thief who took her insignia, and Subaru — who has just talked himself into the idea that a summoned hero must have powers — decides that finding it will be his one good deed for the day.

be flat broke

  • If that's all you got, then you're flat broke.

have no money が事実を述べるのに対し、be flat broke は「見事にゼロだ」——flat が「完全に」と強めるのが違い。

stick to ~

  • Guess I'll have to stick to good-old information-gathering.

  • The gear they've started me off with is a joke.
  • They start every new hire off with a week of training.

  • Actually, it rained on our parade and made things worse.
  • Sorry to rain on your parade, but the shop is closed.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

If I were to guess, ~(当てるとすれば、〜だろう)

If I were to guess, you're the type that basically wastes their whole life, right?

If I were to guess, ~ は「仮に当てるなら」と一段引く——外れても角が立たないのが違い。were to は仮定法で、実現していないことを表します主語が I でも were——× If I was to guess は書き言葉では避けます

PATTERN 2

You may think that, but ~(そう思うかもしれないが、〜)

Well, you may think that, but all of your guesses would be wrong.

No, you're wrong. You may think that, but ~ は一度うなずいてから外す——相手の顔を立てるのが違い。

PATTERN 3

Not only + 倒置, ~ also …(〜なだけでなく、…

Not only am I totally clueless, I'm also broke beyond compare!

I'm both ~ and … 文頭に Not only が出ると、うしろは疑問文の語順——am I / do I / did she と入れかわります(× Not only I am ~)。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

turn the other cheek
