Episode Summary
Four high schoolers spend an entire episode arguing about how to eat things — which end of a chocolate cornet is the head, when to eat the strawberry on a shortcake, whether mayonnaise belongs on curry, and why you must never flip beef tongue on the grill. In between, someone explains the difference between a cold and the flu, and someone else visits a sick friend and mostly copies her homework.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- Tear off the thin end and dip it in the chocolate cream on the fat end.
- Tear off a piece and pass it along.
目的語は off の前でも後ろでも可(tear it off)。
- I split it in half horizontally.
- Split the bill in half.
in half と冠詞なしが型で(× in a half)、split the bill は「割り勘にする」——食事の場でそのまま使えます。
- When I eat it, I always save the strawberry on top for last.
- I always save the best part for last.
for last と冠詞なしが型(× for the last)。話・発表・仕事にも使え、save the best for last が決まり文句です。
- If I pour some sauce on it or drop a raw egg on top, then I mix it up.
- Mix it up before you serve it.
目的語は up の前(mix it up)。 (I mixed up the dates.)、文脈で見分けます。
- You should never flip beef tongue with green onions.
- Flip it over after two minutes.
- I feel sorry for it.
- I feel sorry for whoever has to fix this.
feel sorry for oneself
- I put mayo on white rice and on beef balls. It goes good with that sweet broth.
- This sauce goes good with anything.
厳密には go well with ~ が正式で、go good with ~ はくだけた話し言葉——作中はこちら。
- Good idea. Ah, it figures. You'd know that.
- He's late again? It figures.
I knew it. That figures.
09
get a little distracted
- You're always eating and chatting at the same time, so you get a little distracted.
- I got a little distracted and missed the stop.
a little を足すと言い訳がやわらぎ、be distracted by ~ で原因を言えます。
- You roast it on one side and the heat cooks it all the way through.
- Bake it until it's cooked all the way through.
(I read it all the way through.=最後まで通して読んだ)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
keep ~ from + 動詞ing(〜しないようにする)
I find that if I eat it that way, it keeps the cream from spurting out.
from を落とせません(× keeps the cream to spurt out)。
- A lid keeps it from spilling.(ふたをすればこぼれません)
- Nothing keeps him from talking.(何をしても彼のおしゃべりは止まらない)
PATTERN 2
by the time + 主語 + 動詞(〜するころには)
It's already done cooking by the time you flip it over, isn't it?
うしろは未来のことでも現在形(× by the time you will flip it)——ここが最大のつまずきどころ。主節はよく完了形になります(had already left / will have finished)。
- By the time we arrived, it was over.(着いたころには終わっていた)
- By the time you read this, I'll be gone.(これを読むころには私はいません)
PATTERN 3
have one's own way of + 動詞ing(〜には自分なりのやり方がある)
Everyone has their own way of eating one.
- She has her own way of studying.(彼女には彼女なりの勉強のしかたがある)
- There's no right way of doing it.(正解のやり方があるわけではない)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
save ~ for last
- I always save the best part for last.
- Don't save it for last — you'll be too full.
- She saved her best question for last.
for last と冠詞なしで固定(× for the last)。save the best for last(いちばんいいものは最後に)はそのまま覚えたい決まり文句で、食べ物にかぎらず使えます——プレゼンの見せ場、話のオチ、発表の順番。She saved her best question for last.
