Episode Summary

Subaru and the silver-haired girl track the thief to a loot house in the slums. He goes in alone — and what he finds there sends him back to the fruit stand at sunset, wounds gone, hours undone. On his second try he reaches Old Man Rom's shop first and offers his cell phone for the insignia, only for a client's envoy, Elsa, to arrive with holy coins and turn the trade into an auction. The bidding ends the moment Elsa decides she would rather take everything.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

get down to business

  • All right, well, then, what do you say we get down to business, huh?
  • Let's get down to business.

Let's start.

02

hear ~ out

  • In that case, I guess I'll hear you out.
  • At least hear me out before you decide.

目的語は間に挟む——hear me out(× hear out me)。Hear me out.

03

waste any time

  • Wow, you don't waste any time at all.
  • She didn't waste any time getting started.

04

get a hold of ~

  • I had to work pretty hard to get a hold of it.
  • I finally got a hold of the last copy.

人に使うと「連絡がつく」——I couldn't get a hold of her.(連絡がつかなかった)。get hold of ~ とも書きます

05

That settles it.

  • Then that settles it! The cell phone for the insignia.
  • That settles it — we're going.

OK. が同意なのに対し、That settles it.

06

Not so fast.

  • Uh, not so fast.
  • Not so fast — I haven't agreed to anything.

Wait. が待たせるのに対し、Not so fast.

07

sweeten the deal

  • That way I'd be prepared to sweeten the deal.
  • They sweetened the deal with free delivery.

08

sell ~ to the highest bidder

  • I'll sell it to the highest bidder and be completely satisfied doing so.
  • The painting went to the highest bidder.

09

no less than ~

  • The big muscle man over here tells me it's worth no less than 20 holy coins.
  • It took no less than three hours.

  • There's no use playing these mind games and trying to size me up.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

I'd be lying if I said ~(〜と言えば嘘になる)

I'd be lying if I said you haven't been holding me back a little bit.

I'd be lying if I said ~ は言いにくいことを迂回して出す——相手を傷つけにくいのが違い。

PATTERN 2

Would you happen to ~?(ひょっとして〜ですか)

Would you happen to be in the same business?

Are you ~? が直接たずねるのに対し、Would you happen to ~? (Would you happen to know ~?)。

PATTERN 3

If only + 主語 + could have + 過去分詞(〜できてさえいれば)

If only you could have stood up and done that sooner, things might have gone a bit differently.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

sweeten the deal

名詞にしたa sweetener「上乗せ分そのもの」——They threw in a sweetener.(おまけを付けてきた)。

見出しはget down to business / hear ~ out / get a hold of ~ / sweeten the deal / size ~ up のように、値段と条件を動かす言い回しを中心に据えました。

I'd be lying if I said ~(〜と言えば嘘になる)、Would you happen to ~?(ひょっとして〜ですか)、If only + 主語 + could have + 過去分詞(〜できてさえいれば)——本音を迂回して出す・外れてもいい形で当てる・悔やむ型が並んでいます。

Not so fast. / no less than ~ / can't be helped
