Episode Summary
Kanata quietly sizes up each crew member, trying to work out who cut the communicator. Over a meal, Aries mentions she transferred in June and Funicia says she was adopted the same month — and that a man in sunglasses spoke the words "B-5" the night she arrived at the home. The group concludes they were chosen to die together. Then a meteoroid punches a hole in the ship, and they have eight minutes to run a cable to the backup generator before Shummoor's gravity pulls them down.

- I don't think it's a great idea for us to start jumping to conclusions.
- Let's not jump to conclusions before the report comes in.
Don't jump to conclusions.
02
be out of the question
- She's only ten, so she's out of the question.
- Another delay is out of the question.
be impossible が不可能なのに対し、be out of the question は「考えるまでもない」——話し合う気がないのが違い。 out of question(the 無し)は別語で「疑いない」——混同しないように。
- It seems unlikely she's behind this.
- We still don't know who was behind the leak.
- We were meant to die together.
- These parts were meant to be replaced yearly.
(We were meant to meet.)、設計上そうなっているという説明にも使えます。
- And our deaths were designed to look like a camping accident.
- The form is designed to catch typos.
- Unless that was to throw me off.
- The false trail threw us off for a week.
目的語は間に置く(threw me off)。throw ~ off the scent(においをたどれなくする)は猟犬から来た言い方です。
07
the only logical conclusion
- It's the only logical conclusion.
- Sadly, that's the only logical conclusion.
I think so. the only + 名詞で唯一だと言い切り、reach / draw a conclusion(結論に達する・下す)も定番です。
08
under these circumstances
- None of us can prove that we're innocent. Not under these circumstances.
- Under these circumstances, we'll postpone the vote.
circumstances は複数で前置詞は under(× in these circumstances は英では可)。
- Maybe it was all set up in advance?
- The meeting was set up in advance.
set ~ up には「はめる・罠にかける」という意味もあり(I was set up.)、文脈で見分けます。
- He's ashamed of his failure of a son.
- I'm not ashamed of asking for help.
of のうしろは名詞か動詞ing(× ashamed to his son)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Why would anyone do that?
Why did ~?
- Why would she say that?(どうして彼女がそんなことを言うだろう)
- Why would anyone pay for this?(こんなものに誰が金を払うというのか)
PATTERN 2
I wouldn't be surprised if + 主語 + 動詞(〜でも驚かない)
I wouldn't be surprised if he was involved or wanted me dead.
I think he did it. I wouldn't be surprised if ~ は「そうでも意外ではない」——言質を取らせないのが働き。
- I wouldn't be surprised if it rains later.(あとで降っても驚かない)
- I wouldn't be surprised if she already knew.(彼女がもう知っていたとしても意外ではない)
PATTERN 3
All you'd have to do is + 動詞の原形(あとは〜しさえすればいい)
All you'd have to do is disable the ship.
You just need to ~ が説明なのに対し、All you'd have to do is ~ は「たったそれだけ」——簡単さを強調するのが違い。is のうしろは to のない動詞の原形(× is to disable でも可だが、原形が自然)。
- All you have to do is press this.(あとはこれを押すだけです)
- All you'd have to do is ask.(頼みさえすればいいんですよ)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
jump to conclusions
- Let's not jump to conclusions.
- Don't jump to conclusions before you read it.
- He always jumps to conclusions.
Let's not jump to conclusions until we hear from them.(先方の返事を聞くまでは、決めつけないでおこう)のように使えます。 Don't jump to conclusions.
