Episode Summary

On Shummoor, Kanata forbids the crew from hunting for the traitor. The planet looks barren but hides candy flowers, water-filled cacti and friendly Gruppies — and, under the moss, the carcasses of animals killed by poisonous spores. Yun-hua slips away, believing she is useless; while Kanata talks her down, Luca and Ulgar collapse from the spores, and the antidote turns out to be the one mushroom they already gave away.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

tear ~ apart

  • It would tear our team apart.
  • The scandal tore the party apart.

02

feed off ~

  • I'd say the moss on this planet feeds off dead animals.
  • The rumor fed off people's fear.

03

serve as ~

  • The antidote plant could serve as the bait.
  • The table served as a desk for a year.

as のうしろは無冠詞でも可(serve as chairman)。

04

be a bust

  • This planet might just be a bust.
  • The whole trip was a bust.

a bust of ~(胸像)とは別語。

05

give ~ some thought

  • I've been giving this some thought.
  • Give it some thought and let me know.

I'll give it some thought.

06

in bad shape

  • Luca and Ulgar came back in bad shape, earlier!
  • The roof is in bad shape.

07

the dominant species

  • Making those mushrooms the dominant species of this planet.
  • Ants are the dominant species in this soil.

the dominant player / language / narrative

08

Do your worst.

  • To the enemy that's hiding here, I say, do your worst!
  • Go ahead — do your worst.

Try me.

09

ration ~

  • Possibly five, if we very strictly ration it.
  • They rationed the water to a liter a day.

名詞なら a ration(一人ぶんの割当)。

10

in that regard

  • The Pole Trees might be like ferns in that regard.
  • She's the more experienced one in that regard.

in this regard / in some regards と変えられ、in that respect もほぼ同じ。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

It wouldn't be unusual for A to + 動詞の原形(A が〜しても不思議ではない)

Then it wouldn't be unusual for that fungus to have a poison that actively kills animals.

Maybe it has ~ が推量なのに対し、It wouldn't be unusual for ~ は「例外ではない」——一般則に照らしているのが違い。

PATTERN 2

The 最上級 + thing 主語 + can do is + 動詞の原形(いちばん〜なのは…

The worst thing we can do is doubt one another.

We shouldn't doubt ~ が禁止なのに対し、The worst thing ~ is … is のうしろは to のない動詞の原形が自然(to doubt でも可)。

PATTERN 3

Judging by the teeth, it was an herbivore.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

tear ~ apart

The argument tore the family apart.(その言い争いが家族をばらばらにした)のように使えます。 受け身 be torn apart にすると「心が引き裂かれる」という気持ちの話になり、be torn between A and B(AとBのあいだで板ばさみ)も同じ動詞の定番です。

この 上級版 では、tear ~ apart / feed off ~ / serve as ~ / the dominant species / ration ~ のような仕組みを説明する言い回しを中心に据えました。

It wouldn't be unusual for A to ~(Aが〜しても不思議はない)、The worst thing we can do is ~(いちばんまずいのは〜)、Judging by ~(〜から判断すると)——ありうると述べる・極端を名指す・手がかりから読む型が並んでいます。

It wouldn't be unusual for A to ~ / The worst thing we can do is ~ / Judging by ~ まで扱う、上級者向けの第4話です。
