Planet Arispade is a paradise: the crew fishes, swims and eats well for five days. Back on Earth, forty days after the disappearance, the parents meet to decide whether to file for a declaration of death — and only Aries's mother argues they should search space.

01

exhaust one's options

  • Unfortunately, at this time, I believe we've simply exhausted our options.
  • We've exhausted our options on this route.

02

scour every inch of ~

  • We've scoured every inch of Planet McPa.
  • They scoured every inch of the house.

03

file for ~

  • I say we file for a judicial declaration of disappearance.
  • The company filed for bankruptcy.

file for divorce / bankruptcy / a permit が定番で、file a complaint のようにfor なしで目的語を直に取る形もあります。

04

get straight to the point

  • Allow me to get straight to the point.
  • Let me get straight to the point — we're short on time.

Let's start.

05

be well aware

  • As I'm sure you're well aware, my own son is one of the students who went missing on Planet McPa.
  • We're well aware of the risk.

As you're well aware, ~ は丁寧に前提を確認する定型です。

06

There's no trace of ~

  • There's no trace of them anywhere!
  • There's no trace of the original file.

We can't find it. without a trace(跡形もなく)も定番で、disappear without a trace はニュースの決まり文句です。

07

be lost to the waves

  • Our children have been lost to the waves.
  • The cargo was lost to the waves.

be lost to war / to illness / to time

08

do ~ justice

  • Looking at a picture simply can't do it justice.
  • This photo doesn't do the view justice.

justice に a を付けない(× do it a justice)。

09

on one's behalf

  • Do you think that there's a chance he could talk to the government on our behalf?
  • She accepted the award on his behalf.

(On behalf of the team, …)

  • I would even go so far as to say that it was the most beautiful sound I've heard in my whole life!
  • I wouldn't go so far as to say it's broken.

I think ~ が意見なのに対し、go so far as to say ~ は「ここまで言う」——限界を意識しているのが違い。 I wouldn't go so far as to ~ にすると「そこまでは言わないが」——こちらのほうが頻出です。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

All of the students, as well as their luggage, appear to have vanished.

It seems that they vanished.

PATTERN 2

Then in that case, where do you propose we search?

三人称単数でも s を付けない(× propose that he searches)。

PATTERN 3

I'd be lying if I said + 主語 + 過去完了(〜しなかったと言えば嘘になる)

I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about it, as well.

I thought about it too. I'd be lying if I said ~ は「認めたくはないが」——ためらいが乗るのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

get straight to the point

Let's start. I'll get straight to the point: we need to postpone.(率直に申します。 Allow me to ~ / Let me ~ を前に足すと丁寧さの段が上がり、作中は Allow me to のほう。get to the point

この 上級版 では、exhaust one's options / scour every inch of ~ / file for ~ / get straight to the point / on one's behalf のような会議で使う言い回しを中心に据えました。

appear to have ~ / propose that S + 原形 / I'd be lying if I said ~ まで扱う、上級者向けの第5話です。
