Episode Summary

Planet Arispade is a paradise: the crew fishes, swims and eats well for five days. Back on Earth, forty days after the disappearance, the parents meet to decide whether to file for a declaration of death — and only Aries's mother argues they should search space. On the beach, Quitterie presses Aries about Kanata, Zack explains that every creature here reproduces by cloning, and Luca finally learns Ulgar's story. Then Ulgar draws a real gun.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

hit it off with ~

  • Luca has a way of hitting it off with everybody.
  • We hit it off with the neighbors right away.

it を落とさない(× hit off with)。相手が一人なら with、二人が主語なら with なし(We hit it off.)。

02

fall for ~

  • It's easy to fall for someone you trust.
  • He fell for her the first week.

fall in love with ~ より軽い言い方で、fall for a trick / a scam なら「まんまと引っかかる」——文脈で見分けます。

03

read one's mind

  • I can read your mind like an open book!
  • Stop it — you're reading my mind.

Are you reading my mind? I'm not a mind reader.(察してよは無理)もよく使う言い返しです。

04

keep track of ~

  • What kind of weirdo keeps track of everybody's full names though?
  • I can't keep track of all the passwords.

lose track of ~ が反対で「分からなくなる」——lose track of time(時間を忘れる)は超定番です。

05

tip ~ off

  • You'd think that his last name would've tipped me off.
  • An anonymous call tipped off the police.

06

be on the same page

  • I'm glad you and I are on the same page!
  • Let's make sure we're all on the same page.

the same page は単数でthe を落とさない。

07

Out with it.

  • Now, out with it, Kanata!
  • Come on, out with it.

Tell me. が依頼なのに対し、Out with it.

08

Since when ~?

  • Since when are you two so judgy?
  • Since when do you drink coffee?

When did you start ~? うしろは現在形の疑問文(× Since when did you are)。Since when?

09

In your dreams.

  • In your dreams, pal!
  • You? Beat me? In your dreams.

No way. が拒否なのに対し、In your dreams.

  • Then you'll have him wrapped around your little finger.
  • That cat has him wrapped around her little finger.

have + 人 + wrapped around ~ の形で使い、little finger を落とさない(米では around one's finger とも)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

付加疑問(~, don't you? / ~, isn't it?)

Just tell us the truth. You like Kanata, don't you?

Do you like him? (You like ~, don't you?)、前が否定なら後ろは肯定(You don't ~, do you?)。

PATTERN 2

Guess he's easy to talk to.

It's easy to talk to him. He's easy to talk to.

PATTERN 3

I don't plan on + 動詞ing(〜するつもりはない)

Well, sorry. I don't plan on changing the person I am.

on のうしろは動詞ing(× I don't plan on to change)。I don't plan to + 動詞の原形 も同じ意味で、on を使うほうが会話寄りです。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

hit it off with ~

I introduced them and they hit it off immediately.(引き合わせたら、すぐ意気投合しました)のように使えます。it を落とさないのが決まりで(× hit off with him)、相手を出すときだけ with——二人が主語なら with は要りません(We hit it off.)。

この 中級版 では、hit it off with ~ / fall for ~ / read one's mind / be on the same page / In your dreams.

~, don't you?(〜だよね?)、He's easy to talk to.(話しやすい)、I don't plan on ~ing(〜するつもりはない)——念を押す・人を評する・やんわり断る型が並んでいます。

付加疑問 / be easy to ~ / I don't plan on ~ing まで扱う、中級者向けの第5話です。
