意味その人ならやりかねない

  • Yeah, I wouldn't put it past him.
  • I wouldn't put it past her to show up unannounced.

💡 その人の守備範囲の外には置けない——やりそうだと思っている形です。I think he did it が推測なのに対し、wouldn't put it past ~ は「不思議じゃない」——相手への低い評価がにじむのが違い。否定+would で固定。to + 動詞の原形 で中身を足せます。

意味〜を見逃してやる

  • Don't think for a second this means I'm letting your dad off the hook.
  • The apology didn't let him off the hook.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第6話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

倒置の仮定法(had + 主語 + 過去分詞)

I doubt Dad would have taken me in had he always known.

if を消して had を先頭に出す形です。if he had always known が普通の語順なのに対し、had he always known は if がいらない——硬く、文語的なのが違い。倒置できるのは had / were / should の三つだけで、否定の短縮は使えません(× Hadn't he known)。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Not that + 主語 + 動詞(〜というわけではないが)

Not that I intend to back down, of course.

直前に言ったことへ、あとから断りを足す形です。But I ~ が並べて言うのに対し、Not that ~ は「そう取られると困る」——誤解を先回りして消すのが違い。前の文を受けて独立した一文として置くのがふつうで、Not that it matters.(どうでもいいことだけど)が最頻出です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

It's understandable (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜なのも無理はない)

It's understandable you'd forget.

相手の反応を「もっともだ」と受け止める形です。It's okay が許すのに対し、It's understandable ~ は「そうなるのが自然だ」——理屈として認めるのが違い。that は落とすのがふつうで、It's understandable that you'd feel that way. の形は反論の前置きとしてもよく使われます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

be in the same boat

⭐ 銃を向けられたルカが、ウルガーに返した一言。同じ舟に乗っている——同じ状況を分け合っているという形です。be similar が「似ている」と性質の話なのに対し、be in the same boat は「同じ困りごとの中にいる」——たいてい大変な側だというところまで含むのが違います。だから、愚痴に相づちを打つときにちょうどよく、Don't worry, we're all in the same boat.(心配しないで、みんな同じだから)のように使えます。as ~ / with ~ で相手を足せば誰と同じなのかまで一文で言えます(in the same boat as you)。連帯を示す言い方なので、相手が苦しんでいるときに投げると効きます。

★★★★★ 5.0 / 5

第6話は打ち明ける回。ウルガーは兄を失った経緯と復讐の理由を語り、ルカは自分の生い立ちを明かし、最後にアリスがシャルスへの違和感を口にする——上級版はその「打ち明けて、疑う英語」に絞りました。

この 上級版 では、be in the same boat / wouldn't put it past ~ / get mixed up in ~ / let ~ off the hook / shine a light on ~ のような事情を語る言い回しを中心に据えました。語彙は assassin / uncover / nepotism / heir / empathy のような政治と血筋の語で揃えています。

この回でとくに実用になるのは、断りを入れて言う英語です。倒置の仮定法(had + 主語 + 過去分詞)、Not that + 主語 + 動詞(〜というわけではないが)、It's understandable (that) ~(〜なのも無理はない)——仮定する・打ち消す・受け止める型が並んでいます。
