🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

be entitled to ~

  • He is entitled to his privacy.
  • Every employee is entitled to two weeks off.

have the right to ~ が「権利を持っている」と正面から言うのに対し、be entitled to ~ は「認められている側だ」——制度や約束が背景にあるのが違い。うしろは名詞が基本で、動詞なら to + 原形(entitled to know)。

02

be off limits to ~

  • It's off limits to tourists and ordinary citizens.
  • The third floor is off limits to visitors.

You can't go in が指示なのに対し、be off limits は「規則としてそうなっている」——誰の判断でもないのが違い。 (That subject is off limits.=その話は禁物)。

03

be born into ~

  • Since I was born into such a family, that was home.
  • She was born into a family of musicians.

be born in ~ が場所や年(born in Osaka)なのに対し、be born into ~ は家柄・身分・境遇——into が「その中へ」なのが違い。born into wealth / into poverty

04

cut ties with ~

  • I lost my closest friend and cut all ties with my family.
  • The company cut ties with the supplier.

all を挟むと強まります(cut all ties)。

05

be nothing more than ~

  • I'm nothing more than a caged animal here, Father!
  • It was nothing more than a rumor.

06

be beyond repair

  • I'm afraid the front fusion reactors are beyond repair.
  • The roof was beyond repair after the storm.

can't be fixed beyond + 名詞は応用が広く、beyond recognition(見分けがつかないほど)、beyond help(手の施しようがない)と並びます。

07

mark the end of ~

  • Well, this marks the end of our journey.
  • That match marked the end of his career.

08

come to terms with ~

  • Nobody can come to terms with this that fast.
  • It took her a year to come to terms with the loss.

09

put up a good front

  • They're just puttin' up a good front.
  • He put up a good front, but he was terrified.

pretend to be fine が「大丈夫だと装う」のに対し、put up a front は表側だけ立てる——裏があると分かって言うのが違い。

10

shift gears

  • Quitterie, you need to shift gears.
  • Let's shift gears and talk about next year.

Let's shift gears for a moment.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

It's not as though +

It's not as though she was someone you knew.

She wasn't someone you knew as though は as if と同じで、くだけると It's not like ~ になります。

PATTERN 2

It has a fairytale-like atmosphere, making it a popular tourist destination.

and it makes it ~ と二文で言うのに対し、, making ~ は一文のまま流す——説明が途切れないのが違い。

PATTERN 3

Long after we all died of old age, you'd still be waiting, peacefully asleep.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

come to terms with ~

I'm still coming to terms with it.(まだ受け止めきれていません)のように進行形にすると「途中だ」と言えます。うしろは名詞か動詞ing(come to terms with losing)。
