Episode Summary

The woman in the pod wakes: Polina Livinskaya, an astronaut from the Ark Six, stranded on Icriss for twelve years. Her ship's reactor is intact while the Astra's living quarters are, so the crew joins the two ships together. Zack and Quitterie argue about their dreams and end up engaged. Before leaving, the crew escorts Polina to the site where her crew vanished and recovers an ID tag. On the way out, a blood-type mismatch leads Quitterie to run a DNA test on herself and Funicia.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

be stranded

  • We're also stranded here.
  • Hundreds of passengers were stranded at the airport.

02

be suitable for ~

  • Our mission was to find planets suitable for human habitation.
  • This film isn't suitable for young children.

03

bring oneself to ~

  • I knew the location, but couldn't bring myself to visit.
  • She couldn't bring herself to say goodbye.

04

cross one's mind

  • That thought did cross my mind at one point.
  • It never crossed my mind to ask.

I thought about it (It never crossed my mind.=考えもしなかった)、言い訳にも告白にもなります。

05

be for the best

  • It was a wise decision, and for the best.
  • It's hard now, but it's for the best.

It was good が評価なのに対し、be for the best は「あとから見れば正しかった」——納得のさせ方が違い。 Maybe it's for the best.

06

have to do with ~

  • I'm sure a lot of it has to do with how skilled they are and their unwavering positivity.
  • That has nothing to do with me.

be related to ~ が硬いのに対し、have to do with ~ は話し言葉でも使える——量を前に足せるのが違い(a lot to do with / something to do with)。nothing to do with ~ なら「まったく無関係だ」と強く切り離せます。

07

be reserved for ~

  • This is typically reserved for hull breaches.
  • The front row is reserved for guests.

08

be met with ~

  • The Ark Six flew into this area for the same reason we did and was also met with ferocious wildlife.
  • The proposal was met with silence.

09

There's more to it than ~

  • There's more to it than just the ABO system.
  • There's more to it than money.

It's not only ~ が並列で足すのに対し、There's more to it than ~ は「奥がある」——相手の単純化を止めるのが違い。There's more to ~ than meets the eye.(見た目以上のものがある)が定型で、説明の前置きに置くと座りがよくなります。

10

give up hope

  • I had given up hope, but now I really do get to go home.
  • Don't give up hope just yet.

冠詞は付けません(× give up a hope)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

The fact that our two ships crashed close together, isn't that improbable.

(I can't ignore the fact that ~)。

PATTERN 2

It's + 形容詞 + of + 人 + to + 動詞の原形(〜するとは…だ)

It's really selfish of me to make a request like this.

It's difficult for me to ~ が「私には難しい」と条件を言うのに対し、It's kind of you to ~ は「あなたは親切だ」——for は状況、of は人の性質という使い分けが違い。

PATTERN 3

I was able to confirm that several of the smaller moving fauna, though dangerous, are still edible.

although they are dangerous と節で書くのに対し、, though dangerous, は主語も be動詞も省く——文の流れを止めないのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

bring oneself to ~

I couldn't bring myself to open the letter.(どうしてもその手紙を開けられなかった)のように踏み出せなかった一歩を言うのに向きます。

この 上級版 では、be stranded / bring oneself to ~ / cross one's mind / be for the best / There's more to it than ~ のような事情を語り、判断を確かめる言い回しを中心に据えました。

The fact that + 主語 + 動詞(〜という事実は)、It's + 形容詞 + of + 人 + to + 動詞の原形(〜するとは…

The fact that ~ / It's + 形容詞 + of + 人 + to ~ / though + 形容詞 まで扱う、上級者向けの第8話です。
