Episode Summary

The DNA test says Quitterie and Funicia are the same person, and Charce draws the conclusion that binds the whole crew together: every one of them is a clone, grown so that their 'originals' could one day move into a younger body. Far away, those originals meet and speak openly about the plot. One by one the crew work through what it means, and Zack and Quitterie's engagement lightens the mood. Then the repaired telescope finds their destination — and Polina insists the blue planet on the screen is not Earth.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

let alone ~

  • We couldn't leave a single cell, let alone any corpses.
  • He can't boil water, let alone cook a meal.

02

align with ~

  • But that hypothesis doesn't align with the memories Funi has of her early childhood.
  • The results don't align with our forecast.

03

have no choice but to ~

  • And as a result of your little stunt, I had no other choice but to force a ten-year-old onto their team.
  • We had no choice but to cancel.

had to ~ が単に義務なのに対し、have no choice but to ~ は選択肢を潰されている——不本意さがにじむのが違い。but のうしろは to + 原形(× no choice but doing)。no other choice と other を挟むとさらに強まります。

04

under the guise of ~

  • Sending them away under the guise of a camp?
  • The funds were moved under the guise of research.

05

get wind of ~

  • If the public got wind of that sphere, I have no doubt it would cause quite a commotion.
  • The press got wind of the merger.

  • The stakes were high, and I couldn't afford to get attached.
  • We can't afford to lose another day.

07

track down ~

  • The government could easily track down the clones with even just a trace of genetic data.
  • It took months to track down the original file.

08

be in on ~

  • They were in on it together.
  • Was she in on the plan from the start?

09

ease the transition

  • Others were specially trained to be experts in their fields to ease the transition.
  • A short handover eases the transition.

10

strike ~ as …

  • But it did always strike me as kind of weird.
  • It struck me as odd that no one asked.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

While likenesses are common, no two beings have identical genes.

All beings are different が並べて言うのに対し、no two ~ は「二つ取り出せば必ず違う」——比べ方まで指定しているのが違い。動詞は複数扱い(no two are alike/× no two is alike)。No two days are the same.

PATTERN 2

As if we're a bunch of arch villains.

PATTERN 3

considering the fact that + 主語 + 動詞(〜であることを考えれば)

So, considering the fact that you brought me here instead of Mister Esposito, does this involve a nefarious plot?

Because you brought me here が理由を言うのに対し、considering the fact that ~ は「そこから考えると」——結論は相手に委ねているのが違い。the fact を落として considering (that) ~ でも通じ、うしろが名詞なら considering + 名詞(considering his age)と短くできます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

let alone ~

だから、前が否定でなければ成り立ちません(× I can cook, let alone boil water)。

この 上級版 では、let alone ~ / align with ~ / under the guise of ~ / get wind of ~ / can't afford to ~ のような筋道を示し、隠しごとを言い当てる言い回しを中心に据えました。

no two ~ / As if ~ / considering the fact that ~ まで扱う、上級者向けの第9話です。
