🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第108話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

I'm wondering if ~(〜したほうがいいかな)

I'm wondering if we should go back and check on him.

I wonder if ~ を進行形にすると、「今ちょうど迷っている」という柔らかさが出ます。should と組めば控えめな提案になり、相手の意見を引き出すきっかけにもなります。

他にも使える例:

It might be easier if ~(〜したほうが楽かも)

It might be easier if we split up.

might で提案の押しつけがましさを消す形。if ~ には現在形を置くのが普通です。「こうしよう」と言う代わりに、選択肢として差し出せるのが利点です。

比較級 + than we are on our own(一人のときより)

We're a lot stronger together than we are on our own.

than の後ろに主語+be動詞を置くと、同じ人の「別の状態」と比べることができます。a lot / much / far は比較級を強める語。チームワークを語る定番の一文です。

言い合いの末に、相手の主張を通してやるときのひと言です。文字どおりには「あなたのやり方でどうぞ」。折れているようで、実は「どうなっても知らない」という突き放した響きがあります。頭に Fine, を付けるとしぶしぶ感が強まり、Suit yourself.(勝手にすれば)もほぼ同じ温度です。一方、明るい調子で言えば「お好きなように」と相手に任せる親切な返事にもなります。ハンバーガー店の宣伝文句として有名な言い回しで、「ご注文どおりに」という前向きな意味でも使われます。声のトーンで温度が決まる表現です。
