Episode Summary

💡 be cracked up to be ~ は「〜だと評判だ」。not all ~ と組んで「うわさほど大したことはない」と期待外れを皮肉る定番表現です。

💡 derive from ~ は「〜から生じる・〜に由来する」。語源・原因・利益の出どころを示す論文調の語です。

訳お前は誤った理念を持ちながら、実に見事な子らを育てたものだ。
表現a flawed philosophy欠陥のある哲学
💡 flawed は「欠陥のある」。a flawed ~ で「根本的に問題を抱えた〜」。理論・計画・制度を批判するときの評論的な言い方です。
例文
The policy was built on a flawed philosophy.
その政策は欠陥のある考え方に基づいていた。
I can't remember the last time someone left me tattered and torn after a good brawl.
訳戦いの後にここまでぼろぼろにされたのは、いつ以来か思い出せん。
表現tattered and tornぼろぼろに
💡 tattered も torn も「破れた」。同義語を重ねて強める英語らしい対句で、心身の消耗にも比喩的に使えます。

💡 surpass は「上回る・しのぐ」。surpass one's imagination で「想像をはるかに超える」。exceed expectations と並ぶ改まった表現です。

💡 palpable は「触れられるほどの・明白な」。緊張・興奮・期待など目に見えないものの濃さを表す文語的な語です。

第119話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
Did you honestly believe ~ were limited to …?（〜が…だけだと本気で思っていたのか？）Did you honestly believe my talents were limited to only defensive Enchantments?
俺の才能が防御の術式だけだと、本気で思っていたのか？
Did you honestly believe ~? は「本気で〜と思っていたのか」と相手の見込み違いを突く型。be limited to … は「…に限られる」です。
他にも使える例：
Given ~, I would say it's highly unlikely …（〜を考えると、…の可能性はきわめて低いだろう）Given the size of the ship, I would say it's highly unlikely it's being powered by anything that small.
船の大きさを考えれば、そんな小さなもので動いている可能性はまずないでしょう。
Given ~ は「〜を考慮すると」。I would say で断定をやわらげ、highly unlikely で「まずありえない」と論理的に推論します。
他にも使える例：
so ~ it may as well be …（あまりに〜なので、…も同然だ）Yet it's so far in the depths it may as well be out of reach.
だが、あまりに深いところにあり、手が届かないも同然だ。
so ~ (that) … の結果構文にmay as well be（〜も同然だ）を組み合わせ、事実上そうだという誇張を表します。
