そもそも、なんで大会に出たんだよ?
bother ~ing は「わざわざ〜する」。Why'd you even bother ~? で「意味ないのに」という含みです。
他にも使える例:

あいつらのギルドも案外悪くないかもな。
after all は「結局のところ」。見直した気持ちを表します。
