Episode Summary

Inside the rival guild's hall a fire-eating wizard trades blows with a dragon slayer who eats iron, while the guild master climbs the tower to confront his opposite number and is drained of all his magic by a weeping assassin, forcing the whole guild to retreat. Meanwhile a captive celestial-spirit mage learns she was taken on the orders of her wealthy father, escapes her cell with the oldest trick in the book and leaps from the tower into her friend's arms.

💡 呼びに、やってくる形です。visit が「訪ねる」なのに対し、向こうから押しかけてくる響きが違い。機会や借金取りにも使えます。

訳これはこれは、誰かと思えば。

表現Look what the cat dragged in.(皮肉で)誰かと思えば

💡 猫がくわえてきたものを見ろという形です。Hello が中立なのに対し、思いがけない(あまり歓迎しない)来客への皮肉なのが違い。親しい間柄の冗談にも使います。

例文

Well, look what the cat dragged in! Where have you been?

In lieu of that mess, I prefer a sensible victory without all the commotion.

訳あんな騒ぎをするより、騒がず賢く勝つほうがいい。

表現in lieu of ~〜の代わりに

💡 〜の場所に(フランス語 lieu)という形です。instead of が日常的なのに対し、文書や改まった場で使う硬い言い方なのが違い。

例文

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation.

訳気配すら感じなかった。

表現sense ~'s presence〜の気配を感じる

💡 存在(presence)を、感じ取る形です。notice が「気づく」なのに対し、目に見えない気配を言うのが違い。

例文

訳この勝負はこちらの勝ちと言っていいでしょう、フェアリーテイル。

表現it's safe to say ~〜と言ってよい

💡 言っても安全だという形です。I think ~ が意見なのに対し、反論されにくいほど確かだと示すのが違い。まとめに便利です。

例文

It's safe to say the project was a success.

訳しかも士気がひどく下がっている。

表現dangerously low危険なほど低い

💡 危険なほど、低いという形です。very low が「とても低い」なのに対し、放っておけない水準だと警告するのが違い。燃料・在庫・士気とよく組みます。

訳手厚くもてなすってのも、これじゃ台無しだな。

表現So much for ~〜もこれまでだ

💡 〜については、これだけという形です。That failed が直接的なのに対し、期待が外れた皮肉を短く言えるのが違い。

訳あれは目的のための手段にすぎない……

表現a means to an end目的のための手段

💡 終わり(目的)への、手段という形です。a way が「方法」なのに対し、それ自体に価値はないという冷めた見方を含むのが違い。

表現so be itそれならそれで構わない

💡 そうあれという古い形です。That's fine が軽いのに対し、結果を受け入れる覚悟や冷淡さがこもるのが違い。

訳いやはや、お嬢さん、見事にしてやられましたよ。

表現do a number on ~〜をひどい目にあわせる

💡 ひと芝居(number)を、〜に打つ形です。damage が「傷つける」なのに対し、してやられた・めちゃくちゃにされたとくだけて言うのが違い。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第22話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

I'm simply trying to avoid ~(〜を避けたいだけだ)

I'm simply trying to avoid a fight between two of the Wizard Saints.

simply で「ただ〜にすぎない」と動機を小さく見せる形です。弁明や言い逃れによく使われます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

have the ability to make ~ …(〜を…させる力がある)

He has the ability to make other wizards' powers disappear into thin air.

使役の make を ability と組み合わせる形です。can make ~ … より能力として備わっている響きになります。

条件しだいで対応が変わると示す形です。If you ~ が直接的なのに対し、depending on は柔らかく、ときに脅しにもなるのが違い。
