🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第36話に出てくる、会話でそのまま口から出る表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

wipe the floor with ~

意味〜を完膚なきまでに打ち負かす

  • wipe the floor with you this round
  • Their second team wiped the floor with us.

💡 床を拭く雑巾のように相手を引きずり回す——そんな大げさな絵から来た口語です。beatただ勝つのに対し、こちらは相手にならないほどの大差宣言にも実況にも使えますが、かなり強い言い方なので、遊びや競技の場にとどめるのが無難です。

02

win by default

意味不戦勝になる

  • win by default
  • The other side withdrew, so we won by default.

💡 default不履行相手が出てこなかったから勝ちという意味です。実力で勝ったわけではないという含みがあるので、謙遜にも皮肉にもなりますby default 単独ならとくに何もしなければ——The setting is on by default. のように初期設定の意味でも日常的に使われます。

03

pull someone's leg

意味〜をからかう

  • pulling my leg
  • Relax, I'm just pulling your leg.

💡 冗談で担ぐという定番の口語。lieだますなのに対し、こちらはあとで種明かしをする前提悪意のない作り話です。You're pulling my leg.またまた、冗談でしょという受け答え。足を引っぱるという日本語とはまったく別の意味なので要注意です。

04

Is something the matter?

意味どうかした?

  • something the matter, Sho?
  • You've gone quiet — is something the matter?

💡 the matter困りごとWhat's the matter?何があったのと中身を尋ねるのに対し、こちらはそもそも何かあるのかを確かめる形です。踏み込みが浅いぶん丁寧なので、目上や親しくない相手にも使えます。Is anything wrong? もほぼ同じ働きです。

05

I'm counting on you.

意味頼りにしてるよ。

  • I'm counting on you
  • I'm counting on you to keep it short.

💡 count on ~当てにする数に入れているという発想で、あなたがやる前提で計算しているという意味になります。rely on ~ よりずっと口語的期待を伝えて背中を押す言い方ですが、相手に重さを感じさせる面もあるので、軽い頼みごとには大げさです。

06

Please don't let me down.

意味がっかりさせないでね。

  • Please don't let me down.
  • Please don't let me down on this one.

💡 let ~ down期待を裏切る持ち上げていた人を下ろしてしまうという絵です。disappoint と意味は同じでも、句動詞のほうが会話では自然。目的語はあいだに挟むのが決まりで、let down me とは言えません。I won't let you down. と返すのが定番の受け答えです。

07

Is that all you've got?

意味その程度?

  • Is that all you've got?
  • One question? Is that all you've got?

💡 挑発の決まり文句。直訳は持っているのはそれで全部かで、まだ力を隠しているはずだという含みになります。Give it all you've got. なら全力を出せという励まし。同じ you've got が、挑発にも応援にもなるのが面白いところです。

08

How long are you gonna ~?

意味いつまで〜しているつもり?

  • How long are you gonna wear that thing
  • How long are you gonna keep that box in the hall?

💡 gonnagoing to の話し言葉のつづり。書くときは going to に戻すのが原則です。How long will you ~?予定を尋ねるのに対し、be going to を使うと今の様子から見てのつもりを問う形になります。口調しだいであきれもにじむので、催促にもからかいにもなります。

09

You'd better watch out for ~.

意味〜には気をつけたほうがいい。

  • you'd better watch out for this guy
  • You'd better watch out for the step.

💡 had betterそうしないとまずいという含みの忠告。should よりも強く、上から響きますwatch out for ~目を配って警戒するで、look out for ~ とほぼ同じ。会話では You better ~had を落とすのもよくあります。

10

Can we drop this?

意味その話はもうやめない?

  • Can we drop this and start lookin
  • Can we drop this and get back to work?

💡 drop話題を落とすの意味で働く型。Drop it. と命令形にするときついので、Can we ~? でくるむと頼みの形になって角が立ちません。Let's drop it. も同じ働き。言い合いを打ち切りたいときに効きます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第36話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

You'd better ~(強めの忠告)

You'd better watch out for this guy.

そうしないとまずいことになるという含みの忠告。had better のうしろは原形で、to は入りません。否定は had better not ~not をうしろに置くのが要点です。should より強く、上から響くので、目上には使いにくい——そのときは You might want to ~ が安全です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

now that + 節(理由)

Everything's fine now that you're here.

今はもう〜だからという理由の型。because との違いは状況が変わった点にあり、前と今を対比する含みが出ます。that省いてもかまいません。文頭にも文末にも置けるので、Now that you're here, we can start. のようにも言えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

疑問詞 + to 不定詞

I can't figure out how to get this thing loose.

疑問詞に to 不定詞をつないで名詞のかたまりにする型。how to ~what to ~where to ~ などが作れます。元は how I should get it loose という節で、主語が文脈から分かるときだけ縮められます。why to ~ だけは使えない——ここは覚えておくと得をします。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

I'm counting on you.

あなたを当てにしている——人に仕事を託すとき、英語でいちばん自然に出る一言です。count数える頭数に入れているという発想から、その人がやってくれる前提で段取りを組んであるという意味になりました。だからただの期待より重いrely on ~depend on ~ と意味は近いのですが、あちらはやや硬い言い方です。会話では count on がいちばん口になじみます。続け方は二通り。I'm counting on you.そこで切るか、counting on you to ~してほしいことを to 不定詞で添えるか。後者のほうが頼みの中身がはっきりします。受ける側の返しも決まっていて、You can count on me.(任せてください)。同じ動詞をそのまま返すのが気持ちのいい応酬です。気をつけたいのは重さ。ちょっとした頼みごとに使うと大ごとに聞こえますので、そこは Thanks in advance. くらいが合います。
