Episode Summary
A swordswoman confronts her childhood friend at the top of a tower as the Magic Council's superweapon counts down, and he tearfully claims to have been a helpless puppet all along, right up until the blast lands and the tower, having swallowed its power, proves to have been built for exactly that. As a council member admits whose face he has been wearing, a fire-eating wizard arrives, knocks his friend out for her own good and takes on the schemer himself.
これは 上級レベル版。第39話は、エルザによるジェラールへの詰問、エーテリオン発射と評議院、そしてジークレインの正体暴露が英語の見どころです。come to one's rescue / put forth / spy on ~ といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、pawn / capacity / blueprints / relentlessly / epicenter のような語彙を合わせました。もう一方のレベルは〈中級〉版でどうぞ。
〈上級〉第39話のジェラールの正体、評議会の内幕、そしてナツとの対決から、真相と駆け引きを語る言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

訳自分を救うこともできず、親しい仲間さえ助けに来てはくれなかった。
表現come to one's rescue〜を助けに来る
💡 〜の救出に、来る形です。help が「助ける」なのに対し、come to one's rescue は「困っているところへ駆けつけて救う」とピンチからの救済を言うのが違い。
例文
A stranger came to my rescue when my car broke down.
車が故障したとき、見知らぬ人が助けてくれた。
He isn't capable of putting forth his full power right now.
訳今のあいつは、本来の力を出しきれない。
表現put forth（力などを）出す
💡 前に、出す形です。use が「使う」なのに対し、put forth は「力・努力・意見を外に示す」と改まった響きになるのが違い。
例文
She put forth her best effort in the final.
彼女は決勝で全力を尽くした。
I know you've been spying on me and reporting back to him.
訳お前が私を探って、あいつに報告していたことはわかっている。
表現spy on ~〜をひそかに探る
💡 〜の上で、スパイをする形です。watch が「見る」なのに対し、spy on ~ は「相手に知られずに探る」と秘密のニュアンスが強いのが違い。report back to ~（〜に報告する）も同じ行の表現です。
例文
I think my neighbor is spying on me.
隣の人が私のことをこっそり見張っている気がする。
You never suspected for a moment we were one and the same.
訳われわれが同一人物だとは、一瞬たりとも疑わなかっただろう。
表現one and the sameまったく同一の
💡 ひとつで、同じものという強調形です。the same が「同じ」なのに対し、one and the same は「別物に見えて実は同一」と意外さを強調するのが違い。
例文
The singer and the songwriter are one and the same.
その歌手と作詞家は同じ人物だ。
Did you worm your way onto the Council just for that?
訳そのために評議会にもぐりこんだというのか？
表現worm one's way onto ~〜にまんまと入りこむ
💡 虫のように、くねって進む形で「ずる賢く入りこむ」を表します。join が「加わる」なのに対し、worm one's way onto/into ~ は「策略でまんまと入る」と非難がこもるのが違い。
例文
He wormed his way onto the committee.
彼はうまく立ち回って委員会に入りこんだ。
Looks as though someone's a little worse for wear.
訳どうやら誰かさんは、少々くたびれているようだな。
表現a little worse for wear少しくたびれて
💡 使用（wear）によって、悪くなったという形です。tired / damaged より遠回しで皮肉っぽい響きがあり、人にも物にも使えます。
例文
My old jacket is a little worse for wear.
古いジャケットは少しくたびれている。
Consider my interest piqued.
訳興味がわいてきたよ。
表現Consider my interest piqued.興味をそそられた
💡 私の興味がそそられたとみなせという形で「俄然興味が出てきた」を表します。I'm interested より芝居がかって余裕がある響きになるのが違い。pique は「（好奇心を）刺激する」。
例文
A secret recipe? Consider my interest piqued.
秘伝のレシピ？それは興味がわくね。

訳攻撃を当てられたことを喜ぶがいい
表現get one's hits in攻撃を当てる
💡 自分の打撃を、中に入れる形で「（相手に）攻撃を決める」を表します。hit が「打つ」なのに対し、get one's hits in は「限られた機会に一撃を入れる」と試合や議論でも比喩的に使えます。
例文
He got a few good hits in before the round ended.
彼はラウンド終了前に何発かいい攻撃を当てた。
That spell packs as much of a punch as being hit by a falling meteor.
訳あの魔法は、隕石が直撃するほどの威力がある。
表現pack a punch威力がある
💡 パンチを、詰めこんでいる形で「（見かけ以上に）強烈だ」を表します。strong が「強い」なのに対し、pack a punch は「効き目・インパクトが大きい」と味や言葉にも使えるのが違い。
例文
This small chili packs a punch.
この小さな唐辛子はかなり辛い。
The R-System can't afford to suffer any more damage or it'll be rendered useless.
訳Rシステムはこれ以上傷つけば、使い物にならなくなる。
表現render ~ useless〜を役に立たなくする
💡 render ＋ 目的語 ＋ 形容詞で「〜を…の状態にする」を表す改まった形です。make ~ useless と同じ意味ですが、報告書や説明文でよく使われます。
例文
The flood rendered the bridge useless.
洪水で橋は使い物にならなくなった。
〈上級〉からかう・ぼかす・非を認める——やりとりで効く言い回しを5個。Must-Know とは別枠の実用表現です。
Your expression was priceless, Erza.
訳その顔、見ものだったぞ、エルザ。
表現Your expression was priceless.その顔、見ものだった。
例文
When you opened the gift, your expression was priceless.
プレゼントを開けたときのあなたの顔、最高だった。

訳私の失敗だな。

I'm afraid it's more complicated than that.
訳あいにく、もっと複雑なんだ。
表現It's more complicated than that.そう単純じゃない。

授賞式では、その若手俳優が主役だった。
第39話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
There's nothing worse than having to ~（〜しなければならないことほど嫌なものはない）There's nothing worse than having to come up with excuses on the spot.
その場で言い訳を考えなきゃならないことほど、つらいものはない。
There's nothing worse than ~ing で「〜が最悪だ」を大げさに強調する形です。on the spot（その場で）も同じ行の表現です。
他にも使える例：
How can you live with yourself knowing ~?（〜とわかっていて、よく平気でいられるな）How can you live with yourself knowing that your entire life has been one big lie?
自分の人生がすべて嘘だったと知って、よく平気でいられるな？
live with oneself は「良心の呵責を感じずに生きる」。How can you ~? と組むと強い非難になります。
他にも使える例：
I can't tell you what a ~ … has been（…がどれほど〜だったか言葉にできない）I can't tell you what a blessing Ultear has been.
ウルティアがどれほどありがたい存在だったか、言葉にできないほどだ。
I can't tell you で「言い表せないほど」と程度を強め、what a ＋ 名詞で感嘆を表す形です。感謝のスピーチにも使えます。

いちばん効いたのは、「少しくたびれて」という a little worse for wear でしたね。
come to one's rescue / put forth / spy on ~ / one and the same など、企みを語り、落ち度を認め、結果を述べるときに効く表現が揃いました。
