🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第49話の抗議・説得・引き際の述べ方から、手応えのある表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

give someone a piece of one's mind

意味〜に言いたいことを言ってやる

  • a piece of my mind
  • I gave the landlord a piece of my mind.

💡 胸の内をひとかけら分けてやるという絵の句。怒りをぶつけて文句を言うことを指します。speak one's mind率直に述べるだけで、怒りは含みません——a piece of が入るかどうかで温度が変わります。

02

tell it like it is

意味ありのままを言う

  • tell it like it is
  • She tells it like it is, even to the boss.

💡 飾らずに事実を言うという言い方。ほめ言葉として使われることが多く、歯に衣着せない人物評になります。like がここでは接続詞として働き、文法的には as が正しいとされますが、定型としてこの形で固まっています

03

make someone out to be ~

意味〜を〜のように言いなす

  • make me out to be the bad guy
  • The article made him out to be a villain.

💡 実際とは違う姿に描くという句。不当な描かれ方への抗議でよく使われます。make out 単体は見分ける・理解するで、I couldn't make out the sign. のように。to be が続くかどうかで意味が分かれます。

04

talk someone out of ~

意味説得して〜をやめさせる

  • talk him out of it
  • We talked her out of quitting.

💡 言葉で外へ連れ出すという組み立て。思いとどまらせることを指します。of のあとは名詞か動名詞で、talk him out of to go とはしません。対になる talk someone into ~セットで覚えるのが早道です。

05

talk someone into ~

意味説得して〜させる

  • talked the master into staying
  • He talked me into joining the team.

💡 言葉で中へ引き入れる形。気乗りしなかった相手を動かしたという含みがあり、手柄にも、押しつけにも響きます。persuade と内容は同じですが、こちらは過程の粘り強さが見えるのが違い。into のあとは動名詞です。

06

swallow one's pride

意味プライドを飲み込む

  • swallow my pride
  • He swallowed his pride and asked for help.

💡 誇りを飲み下すという体の比喩。格好をつけずに頭を下げることを指します。行動の前置きとして使うのが型で、swallow one's pride and ~ と続けます。hurt one's pride(誇りを傷つける)と同じ名詞で対になります。

07

send someone over the edge

意味〜の堪忍袋の緒を切らせる

  • sent me over the edge
  • The third delay sent her over the edge.

💡 縁から押し出すという絵。積もっていたものが、それで限界を超えたことを表します。最後の一押しを主語に立てるのが型で、That sent me over the edge. の形が定番。the last straw(それが決定打)と同じ場面で使えます。

08

when all is said and done

意味結局のところ

  • when all is said and done
  • When all is said and done, the team came through.

💡 言うべきことを言い、やるべきことをやった末に——最終的な結論を導く前置きです。in the end より重みがあり締めくくりの一文に向きます。受け身が二つ並ぶ形ですが、定型なので崩しません

09

put pen to paper

意味筆を執る

  • putting pen to paper
  • He thought for weeks before putting pen to paper.

💡 ペンを紙に当てる——実際に書き始めることを指す言い方です。冠詞がつかないのが特徴で、put a pen to the paper とはしません。構想と着手を分けて語るときに便利で、文章仕事の話で出番があります。

10

open up to ~

意味〜に心を開く

  • open up to the rest of the guild
  • It took months for him to open up to us.

💡 閉じていたものを開けるという比喩。胸の内を話すようになることを指します。open up だけでも打ち明けるの意味になり、to ~相手を示します。open up a shop のような開業の用法もあるので、後ろが人かどうかで読み分けます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第49話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

if S were to ~(実現度の低い仮定)

It would break his heart if you were to resign.

were to仮に〜するとしたら起きる見込みが薄い、あるいは望ましくないことを持ち出すときの構えです。主節は would で受けます。If you resigned でも通じますが、were to のほうが仮定の度合いが強く相手を追い込まずに話を進められます

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

There goes ~(倒置の口語)

There goes my rent money.

There を先頭に置いて主語と動詞をひっくり返す形。目の前で何かが去っていくのを実況する言い方です。失われたものを惜しむときによく使われ、There goes my weekend. のように。主語が代名詞のときは倒置しません——There he goes. となります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

so much + 比較級(差を強調する)

It would have been so much easier.

much比較級を強める副詞で、so が重なるとずっと・はるかにになります。very easier とは言えず、比較級を強めるのは much / far / a lotwould have been と組むとそうしなかったことへの悔いがにじみます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

give someone a piece of one's mind

胸の内をひとかけら、相手に分けてやる——怒りをぶつけて文句を言うことを、こう言い表します。面白いのは a piece of です。全部ではなく一部——つまり言いたいことはもっとあるが、そのうちの一つをくれてやる上から見下ろす構えが、この一語に入っています。似た形の speak one's mind とは温度が違います。あちらは率直に意見を述べるだけで、会議でも中立に使えますa piece of が入ったとたん、苦情・抗議の側に振れる——同じ mind でも行き先が変わります。使うときは予告として言うのが自然です。I'm going to give them a piece of my mind.これからやる宣言にするか、I gave him a piece of my mind.済んだ話として語るか。本人の目の前では使わない——第三者に向けて語る句だと覚えておくと外しません。
