🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第51話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

but=〜を除いて(前置詞の but)

It can buy you everything but happiness.

but には〜を除いてという前置詞の用法があります。everythingnothingallno one など全部か無かを表す語のあとに立つのが条件。exceptほぼ同じ意味ですが、but のほうが文が締まりますthe last but one(最後から二番目)もこの仲間です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

so that S could ~(目的の副詞節)

I only came here so that I could see you.

〜できるようにという目的を表す節。中に助動詞が要るのが特徴で、cancouldwould が入ります。主節が過去なら couldにそろえます。in order to ~主語が同じとき専用で、主語が変わるなら so that に切り替えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

I never would have thought ~(思いもよらなかった)

I never would have thought you'd be the one.

仮定法過去完了の形を、驚きを述べるために使った型です。neverwould の前に置くのが会話では普通で、I would never have thought同じあとの節は時制の一致で would——you'd be のように縮めます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

go up in smoke

積み上げたものが、燃えて煙になる——一瞬で失われたことを言い表す句です。効き目は残らなさにあります。be destroyed なら壊れた跡が残りますが、煙になれば何も残らない——回収の余地がないという含みまで運べます。目的語は形のないものでも構いません。貯え・年月・計画・縁談——築くのに時間がかかったものほどよく合います。逆にもともと軽いものに使うと大げさに響きます。近い句に go down the drain があります。こちらは排水口へ流れていく絵。無駄になったという徒労感が前に出ます。go up in smoke のほうは突然さ——どちらの絵が場面に合うかで選び分けられます。主語は失われたものを置くのが基本です。My plans went up in smoke. のように、誰のせいかを言わずに結果だけ述べられるのも、この句が使いやすい理由です。
