🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第55話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

I will have you know ~(言っておくが)

I will have you know I am under thirty.

have + 人 + 原形使役を使った型。知らせてやる——つまり思い違いを正すときの前置きです。少し芝居がかった格調があり、むっとした調子で使われます。I'll have you know縮めるのが普通で、そのあとに反論の中身を置きます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

分詞構文(Biding my time until ~)

Biding my time until now, I kept quiet.

主語を繰り返さずに、分詞で状況を添える形。主文と主語が同じであることが条件です。同時に起きていることにも、理由にも読めるので、文脈が意味を決めます書き言葉で文を引き締めるのに有効で、会話ではあまり使いません

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Whoever S may be(譲歩の複合関係詞)

Whoever your leader may be, they will want me unharmed.

whoevermay が加わると誰であろうとという譲歩になります。no matter who言い換えられこちらのほうが会話向きwhateverwhereverhowever でも同じ作りができます。may は省いても通じますが、あると格調が出ます

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

biding one's time

好機が来るまで、動かずに待つ——ただの待機とは違う、意図のある待ち方を表す句です。bideとどまるという古い動詞。現代英語ではほぼこの句でしか生き残っていません化石のように残った語なので、形を崩さずそのまま覚えるのが近道です。wait との違いは意図の有無にあります。He waited.ただ待っていたHe bided his time.動くつもりで、その時を選んでいた——あとで動くことが前提になっています。だから物語の伏線のように響きます。実務でも使えます。We're biding our time until the rates settle. なら、何もしていないのではなく、待つと決めていると伝わる。受け身に見られたくない場面で、静観を前向きに言い換える一句として便利です。
