🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第56話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

命令文 + and(〜すれば…になる)

Let your arrogance get the best of you, and you're sure to lose.

命令文が条件節の代わりをする型。If you let ~, you're sure to lose. と同じ内容を、短く言い切れますand の代わりに or を置くとさもないとという逆の条件に——Hurry, or you'll miss it.接続詞ひとつで向きが反転します

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

if I were you(仮定法の忠告)

I wouldn't be so sure if I were you.

自分が相手の立場ならと置いて助言する型。主節は would で受けます。You shouldn't ~ より押しつけが弱く相手の判断を残せるのが利点。were仮定法なのでI was とはしないのが原則です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Did you honestly think ~?(反語の問い)

Did you honestly think I'd use my full speed from the start?

本気でそう思っていたのかと突く形で、答えを求めていませんhonestly / really / actuallyあきれを足す部品として働きます。あとの節は時制の一致で would——I'd use のように縮めるのが自然です。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

from the get-go

いちばん最初の時点から——from the start を、ぐっとくだけさせた言い方です。get-go出だしget going(動き出す)から生まれたとされる米語で、二語をハイフンでつないで名詞にした形です。語そのものが新しく、勢いがあるのが持ち味。同じ意味の仲間を硬い順に並べると見通しが立ちます。from the outsetいちばん硬い——報告書向き。from the beginning中立from the start日常from the get-goいちばんくだけている——会話とくだけた文章に限ります。使いどきは振り返って評するときです。It was doomed from the get-go. のように、結果が出たあとで最初の時点を指すのが自然。これから始めることには使いません——そこは from now on の役目です。
