Episode Summary
While a wizard from another guild beams a map straight into the fire-eating wizard's head to guide the rescued girl back to the poisoned swordswoman, the ice wizard takes on the dark guild's speed demon in a motorised duel through the forest. Only after he and his old rival stage a falling-out do they expose the speed as an illusion and end the race with an ice arrow fired from a mile away, though the loser's last desperate gambit leaves the rival in peril.
これは 上級レベル版。第56話は、レーサーのデッドグランプリ、リオンが見抜いた速さの秘密、そしてマカロフとミラの調査報告が英語の見どころです。have the luxury of ~ / have ties to ~ / in grave danger といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、ruse / adversaries / decisive / arrogance / perception のような語彙を合わせました。もう一方のレベルは〈中級〉版でどうぞ。

訳残念ながら、今は時間の余裕がない。
表現have the luxury of ~〜する余裕がある
💡 〜というぜいたくを持っている形で「〜できる余裕がある」を表します。否定文で「そんな余裕はない」と切迫感を出すのが基本で、have time より改まった響きです。
例文
We don't have the luxury of waiting until next year.
来年まで待つ余裕はない。
It apparently has ties to that monstrosity
訳どうやらあの化け物とつながりがあるらしい
表現have ties to ~〜とつながりがある
💡 〜への結びつきを、持っている形です。be related to が「関係がある」なのに対し、have ties to ~ は「組織や人との具体的なつながり」を言うのが違い。ニュースや報告でよく使います。
例文
The company has ties to several universities.
その会社はいくつかの大学とつながりがある。
The world as we know it could be in grave danger.
訳我々の知る世界が重大な危機にさらされるかもしれん。
表現in grave danger重大な危険にさらされて
💡 重い危険の中にという形です。in danger が「危険な状態」なのに対し、grave を加えると「深刻で一刻を争う」と改まった強い表現になるのが違い。
例文
The old bridge is in grave danger of collapsing.
その古い橋は崩落の重大な危険がある。
That fact alone keeps all of my doubts at bay.
訳その事実だけで、不安はすっかり消えます。
表現keep ~ at bay〜を寄せつけない
💡 〜を、追い詰められた位置に留めておく形で「（不安・病気・敵を）近づけない」を表します。avoid が「避ける」なのに対し、keep ~ at bay は「迫ってくるものを食い止める」のが違い。
例文
A warm drink helps keep the cold at bay.
温かい飲み物は寒さを寄せつけない。
Ha, just sit back and enjoy the show.
訳はっ、黙って見物してな。
表現sit back and enjoy the show高みの見物をする
💡 深く座って、ショーを楽しめという形で「手を出さずに見ていろ」を表します。watch が「見る」なのに対し、sit back and enjoy the show は「任せておけ」という自信を示すのが違い。
例文
I'll handle the cooking. You just sit back and enjoy the show.
料理は私に任せて。座って見ててよ。
If you think the two of us are friends, then you're sorely mistaken.
訳我々が友人だと思っているなら、とんだ思い違いだ。
表現sorely mistakenひどく思い違いをしている
💡 痛いほど、間違っているという形で「大きな勘違いだ」を表します。wrong が「間違い」なのに対し、sorely mistaken は改まった強い否定で、If you think ~ と組むのが定番です。
例文
If you think this will be easy, you're sorely mistaken.
これが簡単だと思っているなら大間違いだ。
Your speed counts for nothing if your attacks have no power behind them.
訳攻撃に力がなければ、速さなど何の意味もない。
表現count for nothing何の意味もない
💡 無として数えられる形で「価値がゼロだ」を表します。useless が「役に立たない」なのに対し、count for nothing は「（条件がそろわなければ）評価されない」と条件付きの無価値を言うのが違い。
例文
Talent counts for nothing without hard work.
努力がなければ才能は何の意味もない。
Did you honestly think I'd use my full speed from the get-go against such a weak opponent?
訳本気で最初から全速を出すと思ったか？
表現from the get-go最初から
💡 出発（get-go）の時点からという口語です。from the beginning が「初めから」なのに対し、from the get-go は「最初っから」とくだけた響きがあるのが違い。
例文
I knew from the get-go that the plan wouldn't work.
その計画がうまくいかないのは最初からわかってた。
Wow, that kid must be a glutton for punishment.
訳あいつ、よっぽど痛い目を見るのが好きらしいな。
表現a glutton for punishment好んで苦労を背負う人
💡 罰の大食いという形で「わざわざ大変なことを引き受ける人」を表します。hard worker が「働き者」なのに対し、a glutton for punishment は「懲りずに苦労を求める」とあきれを込めるのが違い。
例文
You're working weekends again? You're a glutton for punishment.
また週末も仕事？自分から苦労を背負い込むね。
You would have been fine if you'd never crossed paths with me.
訳オレと出くわさなけりゃ無事だったのにな。
表現cross paths with ~〜と出くわす
💡 〜と、道が交差する形で「（偶然）出会う・関わる」を表します。meet が「会う」なのに対し、cross paths with ~ は「たまたま人生が交わる」と偶然性を含むのが違い。
例文
I crossed paths with an old classmate at the airport.
空港で昔の同級生とばったり会った。
〈上級〉驚く・話題を変える・確認する——やりとりで効く言い回しを5個。Must-Know とは別枠の実用表現です。

訳へえ、驚いた。
表現Fancy that.へえ、驚いたね。
例文

You just altered our perception of speed, so it would seem that way.

第56話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
Did you honestly think ~?（本気で〜と思ったのか）Did you honestly think I'd use my full speed from the get-go against such a weak opponent?
そんな弱い相手に最初から全速を出すと、本気で思ったのか？
Did you honestly think ~? で「まさか本気で〜と？」と相手の見込みの甘さを突く形です。
他にも使える例：

学んだことがひとつあるとすれば、フェアリーテイルの魔導士を決して侮るなということだ。
If there's one thing I've learned, it's ~ で経験から得た教訓を強調して述べる型です。
他にも使える例：
I never imagined I would be forced to ~（〜せざるを得なくなるとは思いもしなかった）I never imagined I would be forced to send him.
あやつを出さねばならなくなるとは思いもしなかった。
I never imagined ＋ would で「想像もしなかった」と予想外の事態を述べ、be forced to ~ で不本意な決断を表す型です。
