Someone finally explains what they had been holding back, and an old enemy offers to make peace. The language is explanatory — more than I let on, you were onto something, what makes it frightening is that. Useful for coming clean and for laying out a mechanism.

01

bury the hatchet

  • bury the hatchet
  • The two firms finally buried the hatchet.

02

beat someone to the punch

  • beat us to the punch
  • A rival beat us to the punch by a week.

03

spell it out for someone

  • spell it out for you
  • Do I have to spell it out for you?

Let me spell it out.

04

take hold of ~

  • they've taken hold of you
  • Panic took hold of the room.

05

  • Brain was onto something
  • I think you're onto something there.

06

let on

  • than I originally let on
  • He knew all along but never let on.

07

down and out

  • feeling down and out
  • He was down and out after the closure.

08

the sole purpose of ~

  • the sole purpose of our mission
  • The sole purpose of the form is to record consent.

  • wavering between light and dark
  • She wavered between the two offers.

the root of all evil

  • the root of all evil
  • Rushing is the root of all evil in this job.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Let's say (that) ~(仮に〜としよう)

Let's say that a wizard was to use it against a guild.

that は省くのが普通Let's say it costs ten thousand.

PATTERN 2

I never should have + 過去分詞(〜すべきではなかった)

I never should have healed him.

I shouldn't have ~同じ内容ですが、never のほうが悔いが強く出ます

PATTERN 3

What makes ~ … is that …(〜を…

What makes it truly frightening is that it can be controlled.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

bury the hatchet

They made up.けんかのあと仲直りしたThey buried the hatchet. Why don't we bury the hatchet? They buried the hatchet years ago.
