Episode Summary
A fire-eating wizard and his flying cat take on a snake-riding enemy who can hear their thoughts, and discover that the only plan that works is to stop thinking altogether. Below them a reformed dark wizard explains the peaceful origins of the walking city and stays behind to face a former comrade, while the mind-reader turns out to be a poison dragon slayer who is undone by his own sensitive ears.
これは 上級レベル版。第61話は、ホットアイが語るニルビット族の歴史、ミッドナイトとの対峙、そして滅竜魔導士をめぐる言い争いが英語の見どころです。change for the worse / in the hope that ~ / a clear and present threat といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、ancients / resided / prospered / liquefied / infinitely のような語彙を合わせました。もう一方のレベルは〈中級〉版でどうぞ。

表現change for the worse悪い方に変わる
💡 より悪いものの方へ、変わる形です。反対はchange for the better（良くなる）。get worse が「悪化する」なのに対し、change for the worse は「性質や状況が変わってしまう」と変化に焦点があるのが違い。
例文
The weather changed for the worse in the afternoon.
午後になって天気が崩れた。
Nirvana was given its name in the hope that it would bring peace.

表現in the hope that ~〜を願って
💡 〜という希望の中でという形で「〜することを期待して」を表します。so that が「〜するように」なのに対し、in the hope that ~ は「そうなればいいと願って」と結果が不確かなのが違い。
例文
I wrote to her in the hope that she would forgive me.
許してもらえることを願って、彼女に手紙を書いた。
Nirvana poses a clear and present threat to the entire world.
訳ニルヴァーナは世界全体にとって明白な脅威だ。
表現a clear and present threat明白な脅威
💡 明らかで、目の前にある脅威という形で「差し迫った危険」を表します。danger が「危険」なのに対し、a clear and present threat は「疑いようがなく、今そこにある」と報道や公式な文章で使う硬い表現です。
例文
Climate change is a clear and present threat to coastal cities.
気候変動は沿岸都市にとって明白な脅威だ。
We must do everything in our power to destroy it.
訳我々は全力でそれを破壊せねばならん。
表現everything in our power力の及ぶ限りのこと
💡 私たちの力の中にあるすべてという形で「できることは全部」を表します。our best が「最善」なのに対し、everything in our power は「権限や能力の範囲すべて」と改まった約束に使うのが違い。
例文
We'll do everything in our power to help you.
できる限りのことをしてお手伝いします。
I would wager that he is.
訳おそらくそうだろうな。
表現I would wager ~おそらく〜だろう
💡 私なら〜に賭けるという形で「かなりの確率で〜だと思う」を表します。I think が「思う」なのに対し、I would wager ~ は「賭けてもいいくらい」と自信の度合いを示す格調ある言い方です。
例文
I would wager that it will snow tonight.
今夜はおそらく雪になるだろう。
That's a new low, even for you.
訳お前にしても最低の手だな。
表現a new low最低記録
💡 新しい最低値という形で「これまでで一番ひどい」を表します。bad が「悪い」なのに対し、a new low は「下には下があった」とあきれ・非難を込めるのが違い。even for you と組むと痛烈になります。
例文
Lying to your grandmother? That's a new low.
おばあちゃんにうそをつくなんて、最低だね。
Take 'em by storm!
訳一気に攻めるぞ！
表現take ~ by storm〜を一気に攻略する
💡 嵐によって〜を奪うという形で「急襲する・（人気で）席巻する」を表します。win が「勝つ」なのに対し、take ~ by storm は「あっという間に圧倒する」と勢いを描くのが違い。
例文
The new song took the country by storm.
その新曲は国中で大ヒットした。
We're about to have a real fight on our hands, Cubellios.
訳キュベリオス、本気の勝負になりそうだぜ。
表現have a fight on our hands手ごわい戦いを抱える
💡 手の上に戦いを持つという形で「容易ではない勝負に直面する」を表します。on one's hands は「対処すべきものとして抱えている」の意味で、have a problem on one's hands などにも応用できます。
例文
If the other team scores again, we'll have a fight on our hands.
相手がもう一点取ったら、苦しい展開になる。
Oh yeah, now I've got a fire in my belly.
訳よし、腹の底から燃えてきたぜ。
表現a fire in one's belly燃えるような意欲
💡 腹の中の火という形で「強い情熱・やる気」を表します。motivated が「やる気がある」なのに対し、a fire in one's belly は「内側から燃えるような意欲」と熱量を描写するのが違い。
例文
She still has a fire in her belly after twenty years in the job.
彼女は勤続20年でも熱い情熱を持ち続けている。
Humans will never be able to obtain that power in this day and age.
訳今の時代に、人間がその力を手にすることはできない。
表現in this day and age今の時代に
💡 この日、この時代にという形で「現代において」を表します。now が「今」なのに対し、in this day and age は「昔とは違う今の時代に」と時代性を強調するのが違い。
例文
In this day and age, almost everyone has a smartphone.
今の時代、ほとんど誰もがスマホを持っている。
〈上級〉快諾する・評する・意外さを語る——やりとりで効く言い回しを5個。Must-Know とは別枠の実用表現です。

第61話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
So ~ were they of …, they …（彼らは…にあまりに〜だったので…した）So confident were they of their creation, they named it after their homeland
自らの創造物にあまりに自信があったため、彼らはそれに故郷の名をつけた
So ＋ 形容詞 ＋ 倒置で「あまりに〜なので」を表す文語的な強調構文です。They were so confident that ~ を格調高く言い換えた形です。
他にも使える例：
I doubt ~ ever considered …（〜は…など考えもしなかっただろう）I doubt the ancients ever considered their creation might one day be used for evil.
古代人は、自らの創造物がいつか悪用されるなど考えもしなかっただろう。
I doubt ＋ 主語 ＋ ever considered ~ で「〜を想定していたとは思えない」と当時の視点を推し量る型です。
他にも使える例：
even the most ~ of …（最も〜な…でさえ）Criminals can find the dark side of even the most constructive of magics.
罪人はどんなに建設的な魔法にも闇の面を見いだせるものだ。
even the most ＋ 形容詞 ＋ of ＋ 複数名詞で「最も〜なものでさえ」と例外のなさを強調する型です。

第61話「超空中戦! ナツ vs. コブラ」は、空を飛びながらの攻防で動く回。中盤は古代都市の由来をめぐる説明で、名前に込められた願いが明かされます。後半は仲間割れ。読まれる側が読まれ方を逆手に取ります。
この 上級版 では、change for the worse / in the hope that ~ / a clear and present threat / everything in our power を中心に据えました。語彙は ancients / resided / prospered / liquefied / infinitely で揃えています。いずれも作中に実在する英語です。
この回でとくに実用になるのは、状況を論じる英語です。「明白な脅威」「力の及ぶ限り」「〜を願って」「今の時代に」——議論や報告の場面でそのまま上級の型になります。文語の側では So ~ were they of … が倒置による強調の好例です。
