Episode Summary

Six targets, six wizards, and not quite enough of either. The language here is the language of assignment — a one-in-six chance, that leaves me with, no intention of leaving, not yet made aware. Useful for writing about who takes what when the count doesn't work out.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第65話の割り振り・宣告・見積もりの述べ方から、手応えのある表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

Care to wager a bet?

意味賭けてみるか。

  • Care to wager a bet?
  • Care to wager a bet on which team finishes first?

💡 Care to ~?〜する気はあるかという改まった誘い。wager賭けるで、bet と重ねると古風で芝居がかった響きになります。挑発として持ち出すのが型で、実際に金を賭ける話とは限りません

02

Now heed my words.

意味さあ、よく聞け。

  • Now heed my words, wizards of light.
  • Now heed my words: this offer closes tonight.

💡 heed心して聞く・従うlisten耳を向けるだけなのに対し、聞いたうえで従えまで含みます。古い文体なので、宣告・布告・警句の場面に限って使われます。

03

I have no intention of ~

意味〜するつもりは一切ない

  • I have no intention of leaving.
  • I have no intention of reopening that discussion.

💡 I don't intend to ~ よりずっと硬く、強い否定。no意図そのものが存在しないと言うので、交渉の余地を閉じます書面や公式の場で最もよく見る形です。

04

From what I understand

意味私の理解しているかぎりでは

  • From what I understand,
  • From what I understand, the policy changes in April.

💡 自分の把握の範囲だと断る前置きI think より根拠が人づてや資料にある含みが出ます。間違っていたら直してほしいという余白を残すので、伝聞を扱うときに安全です。

05

wreak havoc on ~

意味〜をめちゃくちゃにする

  • It will wreak havoc on Nirvana's control system
  • The storm wreaked havoc on the timetable.

💡 havoc手のつけられない混乱wreak(害を)もたらすこの二語はほぼ決まった組み合わせで、ほかの動詞には移りません被害の広さを言うので、一人相手には使いません。

06

a one-in-six chance

意味六分の一の確率

  • Each wizard has a one-in-six chance
  • There's a one-in-six chance of rolling a three.

💡 one-in-数字確率をそのまま言う形。ハイフンでひとまとまりにして形容詞にします。a 16% chance より直感に訴えるので、説明の場で重宝します。

07

That leaves me with ~

意味残るのは〜だ

  • That leaves me with--
  • That leaves me with two options.

💡 順に取られていって、自分の手元に残ったものを言う形。leaveあとに残すで、選んだのではなく残されたという含みが出ます。割り振りや消去法の締めにぴたりと収まります。

08

be made aware of ~

意味〜を知らされている

  • Natsu hasn't been made aware of your situation yet.
  • The team hasn't been made aware of the change.

💡 know ではなく受け身で「知らされた」と言う硬い形。誰かが伝える手続きがあったことを含むので、伝達の責任を問う場面に向きます。社内連絡や報告書で頻出します。

09

Why do you insist on ~?

意味なぜそう〜したがるのか。

  • Why do you insist on making a fool out of me?
  • Why do you insist on doing everything yourself?

💡 insist on ~ing言われても曲げずに〜し続けるWhy do you ~? と組むと繰り返されていることへの不満になります。一度きりの行為には使えません癖や態度を突く言い方です。

10

I must say I'm surprised.

意味正直なところ、驚いている。

  • I must say I'm surprised you were able
  • I must say I'm surprised by how fast it sold out.

💡 I must say言わずにはいられないという前置き。感想を改まって差し出す働きで、褒めにも皮肉にも振れますどちらに転ぶかは続く語次第なので、後半を丁寧に選びます

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第65話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

As long as ~, it'll be impossible to …(〜であるかぎり…は不可能だ)

As long as I'm here, it'll be impossible

as long as条件が続いているあいだは期間ではなく条件を指すのが要点で、while との違いはそこにあります。後ろに不可能を置く宣告の形になり、条件を外せば話は変わるという含みも同時に残ります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Though it seems ~, we can …(〜に見えても…できる)

Though it seems impossible, we can destroy all six at once.

Though を文頭に置いて譲歩を先に出す型。it seems ~ と挟むことでそう見えるだけだと一段やわらげます。相手の懸念を否定せずに認めてから覆すので、反対意見の多い場で通りがよくなります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

I never expected to ~(〜するとは思ってもみなかった)

I never expected to see the magic bomber fly again.

never + 過去形で一度も予想していなかったI didn't expect ~ より驚きが強く出ます目の前で起きてから振り返って言うのが型で、喜びにも落胆にも使えます

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

I have no intention of ~

交渉の余地を閉じる、最も硬い否定のひとつです。似た言い方はいくつもありますが、重さがはっきり違います。I won't leave.単なる予定の否定I don't intend to leave.今のところそのつもりはないで、あとで変わる余白を残します。対して I have no intention of leaving.
