🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第73話に出てくる、会話でそのまま口から出る表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

I'm starving.

意味お腹ぺこぺこだ。

  • I'm starving. I could eat an entire volcano.
  • I skipped lunch — I'm starving.

💡 starve は本来飢えるという重い語ですが、進行形の会話では「腹が減った」の誇張として定着しています。I'm hungry. より切実で、食事を急かす響き。書き言葉では誇張と分かる文脈でだけ使います。

02

It's a big deal around here.

意味このあたりでは一大事なんだ。

  • It's a big deal around here.
  • Recycling day is a big deal around here.

💡 a big deal重く扱われることaround hereこの土地・この職場ではと範囲を限るので、よそでは違うかもしれないという含みが出ます。慣習を説明するときにぴたりと合います。

03

Trust me, you don't wanna miss it.

意味これは見逃す手はないよ。

  • Trust me, you don't wanna miss Magnolia's flowers.
  • Trust me, you don't wanna miss the first ten minutes.

💡 Trust me自分の見立てを保証する前置き。don't wanna miss ~見逃すと損だという勧め方で、命令ではなく損得で誘うのが要点です。宣伝や案内でもよく使われます。

04

This'll be a blast.

意味きっと楽しいよ。

  • This'll be a blast.
  • Bring the kids — this'll be a blast.

💡 a blastとても楽しい時間爆発の意味から、はじけるような楽しさへ転じた語です。fun より勢いがあり、くだけていますWe had a blast.過去形でも頻出します。

05

You just made my day.

意味おかげで一日が明るくなった。

  • You just made my day.
  • You remembered? You just made my day.

💡 make someone's dayその人の一日を良いものにする小さな親切や朗報に返すのが型で、大げさすぎない感謝として重宝します。justたった今と即時性を足します。

06

Hope you feel better.

意味お大事に。

  • All right, then. Hope you feel better.
  • Hope you feel better — take the day off.

💡 I を落とした短い別れ際の一言具合の悪い相手に向けた決まり文句で、Get well soon. より軽く、日常的です。メールの末尾にもそのまま使えます。

07

Thanks for stopping by.

意味寄ってくれてありがとう。

  • Thanks for stopping by. I'm going back to bed.
  • Thanks for stopping by — sorry it's such a mess.

💡 stop byついでに立ち寄るvisit訪問という改まった語なのに対し、短く、気軽な立ち寄りを指します。見送るときの定番です。

08

I caught a nasty cold.

意味ひどい風邪をひいてしまった。

  • I caught a nasty cold.
  • I caught a nasty cold on the flight back.

💡 catch a cold風邪をひく風邪を「捕まえる」という発想で、get でも通じますがcatch のほうが自然です。nastyたちの悪いと程度を足します。

09

She was really looking forward to this.

意味とても楽しみにしていたのに。

  • Poor Lucy, she was really looking forward to this.
  • She was really looking forward to this trip.

💡 look forward to ~to は前置詞なので、後ろは名詞か動名詞になります。look forward to go誤りです。過去進行形にする叶わなかったという残念さがにじみます。

10

Eat up, you guys.

意味さあ、食べて。

  • Eat up, you guys.
  • Eat up — there's plenty more.

💡 up最後まで、残さずを足します。食事を勧める側が言う形で、Eat. だけよりもてなしの温度が上がります。Drink up. Finish up. も同じ作りです。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第73話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

What's keeping you from ~?(何が〜の妨げになっているの)

Well, what's keeping you from going?

keep someone from ~ing〜させないでおく主語を「何が」にすることで、本人ではなく事情のほうを尋ねる形になります。Why don't you go?詰問に聞こえかねないのに対し、こちらは障害を一緒に探す姿勢になります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Not only ~, but …(〜だけでなく…も)

Not only are they gorgeous in the daylight,

Not only を文頭に出すと、後ろが倒置します——are they であって they are ではありません。ここを間違えると不自然になるので要注意。二つ目のほうが驚きという配置なので、but 以下に本命を置きます

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

I can't wait to ~(〜が待ちきれない)

I can't wait to get to celebrate with everyone.

否定の形で、強い期待を表す言い方。後ろは to 不定詞で、I can't wait for the party. のように名詞なら for を使います。I'm looking forward to ~ よりくだけていて、勢いがあります

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

This'll be a blast.

これは楽しくなるぞ——誘うときにも、振り返るときにも使える一語です。核は a blast。もとは爆風・一吹きという意味で、はじけるような勢いがそのまま「最高に楽しい時間」へ転じました。必ず a が付くのが形の要点です。It was blast. とは言わず、a blast でひとかたまり。使い分けも簡単です。これからなら This'll be a blast.終わったあとなら We had a blast.この二つの形で九割方まかなえます。近い言い方との差も見ておきましょう。It'll be fun.穏やかで、当たりさわりがないIt'll be a blast.音や動きのある楽しさ——大勢で、にぎやかにという絵が浮かびます。だから祭り、旅行、打ち上げ、スポーツ観戦に向き、静かな美術館や落ち着いた食事には合いません。そこでは It'll be lovely. のほうが自然です。使う相手にも少し注意が要ります。かなりくだけた口語なので、社外への案内文には置かないのが無難。同じ気持ちを丁寧に言うならI think you'll really enjoy it. に落とします——場で切り替えられると、誘い文句の幅が広がります
