Episode Summary
A white cat explains that the vanished guild was swallowed to refuel a world running out of magic, sets out some very firm ground rules, and flies two dragon slayers and a tomcat through what is left of the hole in the sky. In a land of floating islands and rivers that flow through the air, where their magic fizzles and the locals flee in terror from the cats, they find their guild alive and well, except that everyone in it has become someone else entirely.

💡 finite は「有限の」で、infinite（無限の）の反対語です。a finite resource で「いつか尽きる資源」を表し、環境や時間・予算の話でよく使われます。
例文
Water is a finite resource, so we must use it wisely.
水は限りある資源だから、大切に使わなければならない。

訳私自身、エドラスに足を踏み入れたことは一度もないの。
表現set foot in ~〜に足を踏み入れる
💡 足を置くという形で「（その場所に）立ち入る」を表します。never とともに使って「一度も行ったことがない」と強調するのが典型で、visit より印象的な言い方です。
例文
I've never set foot in that restaurant.
あのレストランには一度も入ったことがない。
Why don't you know the first thing about it?
訳どうしてあなたは何ひとつ知らないの？
表現not know the first thing about ~〜のことを何ひとつ知らない
💡 最初のことさえ知らないという形で「基本すら知らない」を表します。know nothing about より口語的で強く、自分の苦手分野を言うときにも使えます。
例文
I don't know the first thing about cars.
車のことはまったくわからない。
Now that the cat's been let outta the bag, we should head out.
訳秘密がばれた以上、出発しようぜ。
表現let the cat out of the bag秘密を漏らす
💡 袋から猫を出すという慣用句で「（うっかり）秘密をばらす」を表します。tell a secret よりくだけた言い方で、受け身にすると「秘密が明るみに出た」という意味になります。
例文
Don't let the cat out of the bag about the surprise party.
サプライズパーティーのこと、うっかり言わないでね。
I will need to lay down a few very firm ground rules.
訳いくつか、守ってもらう約束を決めておく必要があるわ。
表現lay down the ground rules基本ルールを決める
💡 lay down は「（規則を）定める」、ground rules は「前提となる取り決め」です。始める前に守るべき線をはっきり示すときの表現で、会議や共同作業でよく使います。
例文
Before the meeting, let's lay down some ground rules.
会議の前に、基本ルールを決めておこう。
I will be abandoning my mission, one handed down by the kingdom itself.
訳王国から直々に下された任務を投げ出すことになるの。
表現hand down ~（命令・判決などを）下す
💡 上から下へ手渡すという形で、上の立場から命令や判決を「下す」を表します。伝統や品物を「代々受け継ぐ」という意味もあり、文脈で見分けます。
例文
The court handed down its decision on Friday.
裁判所は金曜日に判決を言い渡した。
You are absolutely not to pry into the details of our mission.
訳私たちの任務の詳細を詮索するのは、絶対に禁止よ。
表現pry into ~〜を詮索する
💡 pry は「のぞきこむ・こじ開ける」で、pry into は「他人の事情に首を突っこむ」という否定的な表現です。ask about と違い、立ち入りすぎを責める響きがあります。
例文
I don't mean to pry into your private life.
あなたの私生活を詮索するつもりはありません。
So be sure to keep your wits about you.
訳だから、気を抜かないようにして。
表現keep one's wits about one冷静さを保つ
💡 wits は「機転・判断力」で、「判断力を身の回りに保つ」という形です。stay calm より「油断せず頭を働かせる」ニュアンスが強く、危険な場面への忠告に使います。
例文
Keep your wits about you when you travel alone.
一人旅のときは、気を張っておきなさい。
We'll have our work cut out for us trying to save our own skins.
訳自分の身を守るだけで手いっぱいになるわ。
表現have one's work cut out for one大変な仕事を抱えている
💡 仕事があらかじめ切り分けて用意されているという形で「手ごわい仕事が待っている」を表します。busy より課題の難しさに焦点があり、これからの苦労を予告するときに使います。
例文
With three new projects, she has her work cut out for her.
新しい案件が三つもあって、彼女は大変だ。
We'll have our work cut out for us trying to save our own skins.
訳自分の身を守るだけで手いっぱいになるわ。
表現save one's own skin自分の身を守る
💡 自分の皮膚を救うという形で「（他人より）自分の安全を優先する」を表します。protect oneself と違い、保身というやや批判的な響きを帯びることが多い表現です。
例文
He lied to save his own skin.
彼は自分の身を守るために嘘をついた。
〈上級〉疑う・振り返る・あきれる・責める・見切る——大人の説明に効く言い回しを5個。Must-Know とは別枠の実用表現です。

第78話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
I can't guarantee that ~（〜とは保証できない）I can't guarantee that we will be able to return here.
ここへ戻ってこられるとは保証できないわ。
guarantee ＋ that 節で「〜を約束する」。否定にすると「確約はできない」とリスクを率直に伝える型になります。
他にも使える例：
Surprising as it is, ~（意外なことに〜）Surprising as it is, the fire breather is right.
意外だけど、火吹き男の言うとおりよ。
形容詞 ＋ as it is で「〜ではあるが」という譲歩を表す、書き言葉寄りの倒置です。Although it is surprising より引き締まった響きになります。
他にも使える例：
~ aside, I …（〜はさておき、私は…）Fashion sense aside, I do feel quite a bit more at ease now.
見た目のセンスはさておき、だいぶ落ち着いたわ。
名詞 ＋ aside で「〜は脇に置いて」と話題を限定し、本題に移る型です。joking aside（冗談はさておき）も定番です。
