Episode Summary
The Edolas guild explains that the king has crushed every other guild and hoarded what magic is left, while in the royal city his captains admire a giant crystal holding the swallowed town and the king declares even a city's worth of power not enough. Led to a black market by a local Lucy, the travellers learn that magic here comes from shops, not people, are cornered by soldiers, and are rescued by the last person they expected: their own Lucy, whose keys still work.

表現escape unscathed無傷で切り抜ける
💡 unscathed は「傷を負っていない」という硬めの形容詞です。escape unscathed で「危険をくぐり抜けて無事でいる」を表し、事故や不況の報道でもよく使われます。
例文
Somehow, the old house escaped the storm unscathed.
どういうわけか、その古い家は嵐を無傷で切り抜けた。
His Majesty's patience is at its end.
訳陛下のご辛抱も限界だ。
表現one's patience is at an end〜の我慢が限界に達している
💡 忍耐が終わりに来ているという形で「これ以上は待てない」を表す改まった言い方です。I'm fed up より硬く、最後通告のような重みがあります。
例文
After three late deliveries, my patience is at an end.
三回も配達が遅れて、もう我慢の限界だ。
It grates my nerves.
訳その声、神経にさわる。
表現grate on one's nerves神経にさわる
💡 grate は「すりおろす・きしむ」で、「神経をこすってきしませる」という形です。annoy よりじわじわ不快が積もるニュアンスが強く、音や口癖によく使います。
例文
His constant whistling grates on my nerves.
彼がずっと口笛を吹くのが神経にさわる。
You're in a foul mood, aren't you?
訳ずいぶんご機嫌ななめだな。
表現in a foul moodひどく機嫌が悪い
💡 foul は「不快な・汚れた」で、in a bad mood をさらに強めた言い方です。周りに当たり散らしそうな不機嫌さを表します。
例文
The boss is in a foul mood today, so be careful.
今日の上司はひどく機嫌が悪いから気をつけて。
Perhaps it has something to do with the pockets of resistance still out there.
訳まだ残っている抵抗勢力と関係があるのかもしれないな。
表現pockets of resistance散発的な抵抗勢力
💡 pocket は「小さく孤立した区域」で、「点在する抵抗の拠点」を表す軍事・報道の表現です。比喩的に組織内の反対派にも使えます。
例文
There are still pockets of resistance to the new policy.
新しい方針には、まだあちこちに反対の声が残っている。
Oh, I see. They caught wind of you guys.
訳なるほどね。あんたたちのこと、かぎつけられたんだ。
表現catch wind of ~〜をかぎつける
💡 風の中のにおいをとらえるという形で「（うわさや秘密を）聞きつける」を表します。hear about と違い、「本来知られたくないことを」という含みがあります。
例文
The press caught wind of the merger before it was announced.
マスコミは発表前に合併の話をかぎつけた。
Well, that explains why nobody will give me the time of day here.
訳なるほど、ここで誰も相手にしてくれねえわけだ。
表現give ~ the time of day〜を相手にする
💡 時刻を教える程度の最低限の親切を表し、否定文で「まったく相手にしない」という意味になります。ignore より冷たさが強調される言い方です。
例文
She wouldn't even give him the time of day.
彼女は彼をまるで相手にしなかった。
The mold, scratches, and unpleasant smells are what sets my items apart from the rest.
訳カビや傷やにおいこそが、うちの品をほかと違うものにしているんです。
表現set ~ apart from the rest〜をほかと一線を画すものにする
💡 〜を残りから離して置くという形で「際立たせる・差別化する」を表します。different と違い、「優れていて目立つ」という評価を伴うのが特徴です。
例文
Her attention to detail sets her apart from the rest.
細部へのこだわりが、彼女をほかの人と違う存在にしている。

訳このからくりなんか、お気に召しますかな？
表現strike one's fancy〜の気に入る
💡 fancy は「好み・気まぐれな好き」で、「好みを打つ」という形で「ふと心をひかれる」を表します。like より上品で、店員の勧め文句にもよく使われます。
例文
Take any book that strikes your fancy.
気に入った本があればどれでも持っていって。
Okay, fine. I'll pick up the tab for you, but just this once.
訳わかったわよ。今回だけ払ってあげる。
表現pick up the tab勘定を持つ
💡 tab は「勘定書」で、「勘定書を取り上げる」という形で「代金を払う・おごる」を表します。pay より口語的で、食事や飲み会でよく使います。
例文
Don't worry about the bill. The company will pick up the tab.
支払いは気にしないで。会社が持つから。
〈上級〉異を唱える・持ち上げる・たしなめる・請け合う・言い切る——改まった場面で効く言い回しを5個。Must-Know とは別枠の実用表現です。
With all due respect, Your Majesty, our calculations suggest that it's actually quite the opposite.
訳お言葉ですが陛下、計算ではむしろ逆の結果が出ております。

第80話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
I won't be satisfied until ~（〜するまで満足しない）I won't be satisfied until my kingdom of Edolas is free from all restrictions.
わがエドラス王国があらゆる制約から解き放たれるまで、余は満足せん。
not ~ until … で「…して初めて〜する」という型です。satisfied と組み合わせて「…するまで手を緩めない」という強い決意を示します。
他にも使える例：
It's hard for us to believe (that) ~ would ever …（〜が…するなんて信じがたい）It's hard for us to believe she'd ever align herself with Fairy Tail.
あの人がフェアリーテイルの味方につくなんて、私たちには信じられないわ。
It's hard to believe にwould ever を続け、「〜が…することなど想像できない」と強い意外さを表す型です。
他にも使える例：
I could be mistaken, but it seems as if ~（思い違いかもしれないが、〜のようだ）I could be mistaken, but it seems as if magic spells are treated like objects in this world.
思い違いかもしれないけれど、この世界では魔法は「物」として扱われているようね。
I could be mistaken, but で断定を避ける前置きをし、it seems as if ~ で推測を述べる、控えめな分析の型です。
