🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第85話に出てくる、会話でそのまま口から出る表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

Is everybody else okay?

意味ほかのみんなは無事。

  • Is everybody else okay?
  • Is everybody else okay in there?

💡 everybody else は自分以外の全員。else を落とすと自分も含めた全員になるので、目の前の相手に尋ねる場面では else が要ります。自分の無事が分かった直後に出る問いで、順番として自然です。

02

You have a point there.

意味たしかにそうだね。

  • You have a point there
  • You have a point there — I hadn't thought of it.

💡 have a point は言うことに理がある。there が今のその指摘についてと範囲を絞るので、全面的な同意にはなりません。一歩譲るときにちょうどよく、議論の途中で使いやすい言い方です。

03

You saved me. Thank you.

意味助けてくれてありがとう。

  • You saved me. Thank you.
  • You saved me back there. Thank you.

💡 短い二文に分けるのが効いています。Thank you for saving me. と一文にするより、事実を置いてから礼を言うほうが実感がこもって伝わります。語順が気持ちの順番になっている好例です。

04

I thought you'd be angry.

意味怒ってると思ってた。

  • I thought you'd be angry
  • I thought you'd be angry about the change.

💡 you'd は you would。過去の時点での予想を表すので、実際はそうでなかったという含みが自然に出ます。I thought you were angry. にすると実際に怒っていたと思っていた——would の有無で意味が変わります。

05

Forget about that for now.

意味それはいったん置いておこう。

  • But forget about that for now
  • Forget about that for now — we'll deal with it later.

💡 for now が今のところはと限ることで、忘れろという命令がやわらぎます。あとで戻る前提が伝わるので、相手の関心を無視したことになりません。話題を切り替えるときの便利な一言。

06

That was just a bluff.

意味あれは口から出た嘘だよ。

  • That was just a bluff, obviously
  • That was just a bluff — I had nothing.

💡 bluff は強がりの嘘・はったり。相手を退かせるために本当でないことを言うことで、悪意のある嘘とは区別されます。call someone's bluff(はったりを見破る)と対で覚えておくと働きが見えます。

07

Weren't you listening?

意味聞いてなかったの。

  • Weren't you listening?
  • Weren't you listening when she explained it?

💡 否定疑問で、聞いていなかったことを責める形。答えは求めていません。Were you listening? がただの確認なのに対し、否定にすると呆れが入ります。親しい相手にだけ使います。

08

That's not such a good idea.

意味それはあまりよくないと思う。

  • That's not such a good idea
  • That's not such a good idea in this weather.

💡 not such a ~ はそれほど〜ではない。That's a bad idea. と言い切るよりずっとやわらかく、相手の案を頭から否定しません。代案を続けやすいのが利点です。

09

Seems the plan worked.

意味うまくいったみたいだね。

  • Seems the plan worked
  • Seems the plan worked after all.

💡 It が落ちた会話特有の短縮。seem が確かめる前の見立てを示すので、喜びすぎない、落ち着いた調子になります。まだ油断できない場面にふさわしい言い方です。

10

Things are getting worse by the minute.

意味どんどん悪くなってる。

  • Things are getting worse by the minute
  • It's getting colder by the minute.

💡 by the minute は一分ごとに——変化の速さを表す決まった言い方です。by the day by the second と単位を替えて使えます。進行形と組むのが型で、今まさに進んでいることが伝わります。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第85話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Maybe it would be a different story if ~(〜だったら話は別だけど)

Maybe it would be a different story if you hadn't come back.

a different story はまったく別の話。仮定法過去完了と組むことで、実際にはそうならなかったことがはっきりします。相手を許す場面で使うと条件つきで責めていないと伝わり、角が立ちません。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

I'm just smiling because ~(〜だから笑ってるだけ)

I'm just smiling because that's something you'd do.

just がそれだけのことだと限定し、相手の詰問をやわらかく受け流します。because の後ろに理由を丸ごと置けるので、誤解を解くのに向きます。笑われたと感じた相手への返しとして便利です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

I thought you were ~(〜だと思ってたのに)

Hold on, I thought you were some kind of princess.

直前に信じていたことが崩れたときの言い方。I thought がそう思っていた(が違った)という言外の否定を運ぶので、but を付けなくても食い違いが伝わります。責めずに驚きだけを出せるのが利点で、軽い抗議にも使えます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

You have a point there.

相手の指摘を認めるときの、いちばん使いやすい言い方です。a point は筋の通った主張。have a point で言うことに理があるとなります。この表現の要は部分的な同意で止められるところです。You're right. は全面的に認めたことになりますが、You have a point. はその一点については認めるにとどまります。だから議論の途中で使っても、負けたことにならない——会議でとくに重宝します。there の働きも押さえておきます。今のその発言についてと範囲を狭めるので、付けるほど限定が強まります。形のバリエーションも覚えやすいものばかりです。You've got a point. はくだけた形。Fair point. は二語で済む、いちばん軽い形で、相手の反論を素早く認めて次へ進めます。That's a fair point. にするとやや丁寧になります。逆に相手の指摘に理がないと言いたいときはI don't think that's the point. やThat's beside the point.(それは論点ではない)——同じ point を使って向きだけ変えられるのが、この語の便利なところです。
