🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第89話の報告・下問・受け答えの述べ方から、手応えのある表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

Don't trouble yourself.

意味お気遣いなく。

  • Don't trouble yourself
  • Don't trouble yourself — I'll manage.

💡 申し出を断るときのいちばん丁寧な形のひとつです。trouble は手間をかけさせるで、あなたの手間が惜しいと言うことで断っています。No, thank you. より相手を立てるので、目上にも使えます。

02

May I ask who these men are?

意味こちらの方々は。

  • who these men are
  • May I ask who I'm speaking with?

💡 May I ask ~? は尋ねてもよろしいか。質問の前に許しを取るぶん、立ち入った問いでも角が立ちません。who these men are が間接疑問なので語順は平叙文——who are these men とはしません。

03

I've heard you've successfully retrieved the key.

意味鍵を取り戻したと聞いている。

  • you've successfully retrieved the key
  • I've heard you've finished the report.

💡 現在完了を二つ重ねるのがこの型の形です。前が聞いた、後ろがやり終えた——どちらも今につながるので完了形になります。successfully は首尾よくで、報告を受ける側の物言いらしさが出ます。

04

Not entirely, Your Majesty.

意味そうとも言い切れません。

  • Not entirely, Your Majesty
  • Not entirely — there's a catch.

💡 Not entirely は全部そうではない——否定を半分だけにする言い方です。No. と言い切らずに済むので、目上に悪い知らせを伝えるときに向きます。この後ろに事情を続けるのが作法です。

05

Explain yourself.

意味申し開きをせよ。

  • Explain yourself
  • Explain yourself, please.

💡 explain yourself は自分の行いを説明する。explain it が事柄の説明なのに対し、目的語が yourself になると責任を問う形に変わります。強い叱責なので、立場が上の者だけが使える言い方です。

06

He is indeed.

意味さようでございます。

  • He is indeed
  • It is indeed.

💡 indeed はまさしく。相手の言ったことをそのまま受けて肯定するときに、be 動詞だけ残して後ろを省くのがこの形です。Yes. だけよりずっと改まって聞こえ、英国風の丁寧な受け答えとしてよく使われます。

07

Glad to see you're unharmed.

意味ご無事で何よりです。

  • Glad to see you're unharmed
  • Glad to see you're back on your feet.

💡 頭の I'm が落ちているのが会話のくせで、書くときは I'm glad to see ~ に戻します。unharmed は傷ひとつない——safe が安全な場所にいることを指すのに対し、体に害が及んでいないことを言います。

08

Do you need assistance?

意味お手伝いいたしましょうか。

  • Do you need assistance?
  • Do you need assistance with your bags?

💡 assistance は help の改まった語です。駅や空港の案内、職場の申し出で好まれ、Do you need help? より一歩引いた丁寧さが出ます。数えられない名詞なので、an assistance とは言いません。

09

How were you able to stop it using only your bare hands?

意味素手でどうやって止めたのか。

  • How were you able to stop it using only your bare hands?
  • How were you able to finish it in one night?

💡 were you able to ~ は一度きりの場面で実際にできたことを指します。could you ~ だとふだんできたかどうかに寄るので、この一回の出来事を問うときは be able toが正確。bare hands は道具を使わない手です。

10

That is an order!

意味これは命令だ。

  • That is an order
  • That is an order, not a request.

💡 言ったことを、頼みではなく命令だと言い直すひと言です。That は直前に言った内容全部を指します。短縮しないのが要で、That's an order. よりもThat is an order. のほうが重く響きます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第89話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

How were you able to ~?(どうやって〜できたのか)

How were you able to stop it using only your bare hands?

be able to の過去形は一度きりの場面で実際にやりおおせたことを指します。could はそのころできたという能力全体に寄るので、その一回を問うときは was/were able toが正確です。報告を受ける側の問い方として書き言葉でも通ります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

~ is not to be used(〜を用いてはならない)

Article 23 of the Royal Charter says it's not to be used under any circumstances.

be 動詞 + to 不定詞は規則として定められていることを表します。must not が話し手の禁止なのに対し、こちらは誰かの意志ではなく決まりそのもの——条文・社内規程・掲示で好まれる形です。受け身と組むと主語を出さずに済むのも利点です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

~ as easily as …(…と同じくらい容易に〜)

Normally, this sword can slice through iron as easily as it would through butter.

as + 副詞 + as の比較で、やさしさの程度をそろえます。後ろの as の中は繰り返しを避けて would だけ残すのがこなれた書き方で、as it would cut through butter の動詞が省かれています。大げさなたとえを作るときの定番です。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

Don't trouble yourself.

相手の申し出を、立てながら断るためのひと言です。鍵は trouble を動詞で使っているところ。trouble は名詞では面倒ですが、動詞にすると人に手間をかけさせるになります。つまりこの文はご自分に手間をかけさせないでください——断りの理由を、相手の負担に置いているのが丁寧に響く仕掛けです。使い分けも押さえておくと選びやすくなります。No, thanks. は親しい相手にだけ。That's all right. は中立。Don't trouble yourself. はいちばん改まり、目上や初対面にも使えます。裏返しの表現も対で覚えておくと便利です。頼まれた側が It's no trouble at all. と返せばまったく手間ではありません——同じ trouble を使って、きれいに受けられます。手伝いを申し出られて断るとき、この二つで会話がひと組になります。
