🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第95話の告白・弁明・詫びから、手応えのある表現を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

We beg your forgiveness.

意味どうかお許しください。

  • We beg your forgiveness
  • I beg your forgiveness for the delay.

💡 beg はこいねがう。I'm sorry. が気持ちを述べるのに対し、こちらは許しそのものを乞う形で、謝罪の階段でいちばん上に来ます。公式の詫び状や式辞でも見かける言い方です。

02

Now, we deeply regret it.

意味今となっては、深く悔やんでいる。

  • now, we deeply regret it
  • We deeply regret the inconvenience.

💡 regret はしてしまったことを悔やむ。be sorry よりずっと硬く、責任を認める色が濃く、企業や公職の声明で定型になっている語です。deeply を添えるのがその定型の一部です。

03

You shouldn't be held responsible.

意味あなたが責めを負うべきではない。

  • You shouldn't be held responsible
  • No one should be held responsible for an honest mistake.

💡 hold ~ responsible は〜に責任を負わせる。受け身にすると誰が負わせるかを言わずに済むので、かばう側の言い方として自然になります。blame が感情的に責めるのに対し、こちらは制度的・形式的な響きです。

04

We are lucky to be granted this new beginning.

意味新しい始まりを与えられたのは幸いだ。

  • We are lucky to be granted this new beginning
  • We were lucky to be granted a second hearing.

💡 grant は上の立場の者が与える。give より重く、恩恵や許可の色が出ます。受け身にすると与え手をぼかせるので、天や運に与えられたと読ませたいときに向きます。

05

I'm not fit to call myself a mother.

意味母を名乗る資格はない。

  • I'm not fit to call myself a mother
  • I'm not fit to call myself a teacher yet.

💡 be fit to ~ は〜するにふさわしい。I'm not a good mother. が出来を言うのに対し、こちらは名乗る資格そのものを否定します。自分を厳しく裁く場面で使われる、強い言い方です。

06

On an unrelated note...

意味話は変わるが……

  • on an unrelated note
  • On an unrelated note, the report is ready.

💡 note は話題のひと項目。By the way がくだけた前置きなのに対し、こちらは会議や報告でも通る硬さがあります。On a related note なら関連して——一語で向きを切り替えられます。

07

I could ask you the same thing.

意味それはこちらの台詞だ。

  • I could ask you the same thing
  • I could ask you the same question.

💡 could が「言おうと思えば言える」という含みを作ります。I ask you the same thing. ではただの繰り返しですが、could が入ると切り返しになる——法助動詞ひとつで意味が変わる典型です。

08

I am merely a woman who was named a queen.

意味私はただ、女王と名づけられた一人の女にすぎない。

  • merely a woman who was named a queen
  • I am merely a messenger.

💡 merely はただ〜にすぎない。only とほぼ同じ意味ですが、merely のほうが書き言葉寄りで、控えめさが強く出ます。肩書きを退けて自分を小さく置くときの定番です。

09

I tried my best to fit in.

意味溶け込もうと精一杯やった。

  • I tried my best to fit in
  • She tried her best to fit in at the new school.

💡 fit in はその場になじむ。join が加わるという動作なのに対し、こちらは浮かずにいられるかという状態を指します。転校・転職・移住の話でいちばんよく出る句動詞です。

10

Despite what you've heard...

意味聞いている話とは違って……

  • Despite what you've heard
  • Despite what you've read, the rule hasn't changed.

💡 despite は前置詞なので後ろに節は置けません。そこで what ~ という名詞節を後ろに置くのがこの形の勘どころです。うわさを先に打ち消してから本題に入る——弁明の入り口としてよく使われます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第95話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Why bother ~ing?(わざわざ〜する必要があるか)

Why bother telling them?

bother は手間をかける・わざわざする。Why tell them? がただの疑問なのに対し、bother が入ると「割に合わない」という判断が乗ります。後ろは動名詞が基本で、Why bother to tell them? も可ですが-ing のほうが自然です。Don't bother. だけでいいよ、やらなくて——断りの決まり文句としても使えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

be held responsible for ~(〜の責めを負わされる)

You shouldn't be held responsible.

hold ~ responsible の受け身です。誰が責めるのかを言わずに済むのが受け身の働きで、かばうときにも、規則を述べるときにも使えます。後ろは for + 名詞/動名詞。be held accountable for ~ はほぼ同義でさらに硬い言い方です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Despite what ~(〜とは違って)

Despite what you've heard...

despite は前置詞なので、後ろに文をそのまま置けません。what ~ の名詞節を挟むことで「〜であることにもかかわらず」を一語で言えるようになります。Despite the rain(名詞)、Despite what he said(名詞節)——この二つだけ覚えれば足ります。in spite of は同義でややくだけた形です。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use expression

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

I could ask you the same thing.

問いをそのまま相手に返すときのひと言です。鍵は could。I ask you the same thing. と言ってしまうとただの繰り返しですが、could を入れると「言おうと思えば言える」という含みが生まれ、切り返しになります。直接ぶつけない分、角が立ちにくいのが利点です。同じ働きの言い方も並べておくと使い分けられます。Look who's talking. はお前が言うかというはっきりした冷やかし、I could say the same about you. はもう少し落ち着いた返し、That's my line. はくだけた口語——場の硬さに合わせて選べます。相手を責めずに立場を並べたいときに、この形がいちばん収まります。
