🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第95話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。
PATTERN 1
Let's not ~(〜するのはやめよう)
Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
先走るのはやめよう。
Let's ~ の否定は Don't let's ではなくLet's not ~ です。Don't ~ が相手だけに向くのに対し、自分も含めて止めるのがこの形。angle を立てずに場を止められるので、仲間内の制止にいちばん向きます。
他にも使える例:
- Let's not argue about it now.
- Let's not stay too long.
PATTERN 2
Feel free to ~(遠慮なく〜して)
Feel free to come and visit us anytime.
いつでも気軽に遊びに来て。
feel free は気兼ねしない気持ちでいる。You may ~ が上から許す響きなのに対し、こちらは相手の遠慮を先回りして外します。否定と組むと断りやすさも渡せます——Feel free to say no.(断ってくれていい)。
他にも使える例:
- Feel free to help yourself.
- Feel free to leave whenever you like.
PATTERN 3
Here's to ~(〜に乾杯/〜を祝して)
Here's to making a fresh start.
新しい門出に。
杯を掲げるときの決まり文句ですが、飲み物がなくても言えます。後ろは名詞か動名詞で、to は前置詞なので動詞の原形は置けません。Here's to you. は相手をたたえる、Here's to next year. はこれからを祝す——短い祝辞がこれ一つで作れます。
他にも使える例:
- Here's to the happy couple.
- Here's to finishing on time.
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use expression
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
Don't be strangers.
ごぶさたしないでね。
- Don't be strangers
- Don't be a stranger.
- Don't be a stranger — write sometimes.
別れぎわの、いちばん短くて温かいひと言です。鍵は stranger が見知らぬ人だというところ。「知らない人みたいにならないで」と言うことで、また会おうという気持ちを押しつけずに渡せます。Keep in touch.(連絡を取り合おう)が相手に行動を求めるのに対し、こちらは関係のほうを主語にするのでずっと軽く響きます。数にだけ気をつけてください。相手が一人なら Don't be a stranger.、複数なら Don't be strangers. です。別れ際の並べ方も覚えておくと便利です。Take care. Don't be a stranger. Say hi to everyone.——体を気づかい、また会おうと言い、家族によろしくと続ける三つで、短い見送りがきれいに収まります。
