Episode Summary
The candidates sail to the sacred island in sweltering heat, only for the first round to begin before anyone has landed, as one team seals the others aboard and another quietly writes itself a way out. Arriving dead last, a celestial-spirit mage and a card-reading wizard are forced onto a route guarded by two old rivals and win with a strategy built largely on distraction, while the fire-eater picks the path he is sure leads to Erza and finds someone far worse.

表現of great importance非常に重要な
💡 of + 抽象名詞で形容詞の働きをする型です。of great importance = very important。of value / of interest と並び、改まった文章でよく使われます。
例文
This decision is of great importance to our future.
この決定は私たちの将来にとって非常に重要だ。
If any of the master's events were ever deemed simple, he'd probably keel over.
訳マスターの試験が簡単だなんて言われたら、マスターのほうがひっくり返っちまうよ。
表現keel overばったり倒れる
💡 keel は船の「竜骨」で、船がひっくり返るイメージから「（人が）ばったり倒れる」を表します。驚きのあまり卒倒するという大げさな冗談にも使います。
例文
It was so hot that I almost keeled over.
あまりの暑さに倒れそうになった。
Please direct your attention to the smoke coming from the shore.
訳岸から上がる煙に注目してもらいたい。
表現direct one's attention to ~〜に注目する
💡 注意を〜へ向けるという形で「〜にご注目ください」を表します。look at よりずっと丁寧で、プレゼンや案内放送の定番です。
例文
Please direct your attention to the screen.
スクリーンにご注目ください。
So don't dawdle and pick one.
訳だから、ぐずぐずせずに一つ選ぶのじゃ。
表現don't dawdleぐずぐずするな
💡 dawdle は「のろのろする・道草を食う」で、Don't dawdle. は「もたもたするな」と急がせる一言です。親が子に言う響きのあるやや古風な語です。
例文
Don't dawdle, or we'll be late.
ぐずぐずしないで。遅れるよ。
Combat routes are self-explanatory.
訳戦闘ルートは言うまでもない。
表現be self-explanatory説明不要である
💡 それ自体が説明になっているという形で「見ればわかる・説明するまでもない」を表します。マニュアルや会議で「詳しい説明は省きます」と言うときに便利です。
例文
The instructions are pretty self-explanatory.
その説明書は見ればわかる内容だ。
Someone with my talents could handle the toughest enchantments with ease.
訳俺ほどの才能があれば、どんな難しい術式もやすやすと扱える。
表現with easeやすやすと
💡 容易さとともにという形で「楽々と・難なく」を表します。easily の改まった言い方で、with great ease と強めることもできます。
例文
She passed the exam with ease.
彼女はやすやすと試験に合格した。
Very clean bathrooms are a staple of any good home.
訳ピカピカの浴室は、良い家の基本です。
表現a staple of ~〜の定番
💡 staple は「主要産物・必需品」で、「〜に欠かせない定番のもの」を表します。食べ物なら「主食」、ファッションなら「定番アイテム」の意味になります。
例文
Rice is a staple of the Japanese diet.
米は日本の食生活の主食だ。
Irreplaceable objects should be handled with care.
訳かけがえのない物は丁寧に扱うべし。
表現handle ~ with care〜を慎重に扱う
💡 注意をもって扱うという形で「取り扱い注意」を表します。Handle with care は荷物の表示でおなじみで、デリケートな問題にも比喩的に使えます。
例文
This box contains glass. Please handle it with care.
この箱にはガラスが入っています。丁寧に扱ってください。
But I feel I owe those two a debt of sorts.
訳だが、あの二人にはある意味で借りがある気がしてな。
表現owe ~ a debt of sorts〜にある種の借りがある
💡 owe ~ a debt で「〜に借りがある」、of sorts で「一種の・ある意味での」とぼかします。恩義をはっきり言わずに認める、含みのある言い方です。
例文
I owe my old teacher a debt of sorts.
昔の先生には、ある意味で恩がある。
To be honest, I think you got the better end of the deal.
訳正直、得したのはお前の方だと思うぜ。
表現get the better end of the deal得な方を取る
💡 取引の良い方の端を取るという形で「（交換や取り決めで）得をする」を表します。the short end of the stick（損な役回り）が反対の表現です。
例文
I traded my old bike for his guitar. I got the better end of the deal.
古い自転車を彼のギターと交換した。得したのは私の方だ。
〈上級〉諭す・距離を置く・見抜く・驚く・同情する——大人の会話に効く言い回しを5個。Must-Know とは別枠の実用表現です。
It wouldn't be much of a trial then.
訳それじゃ試験にならんじゃろ。
表現It wouldn't be much of a ~ then.それじゃ〜にならない

If everyone wins, it wouldn't be much of a contest then.

第98話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
Even as a ~, I think …（〜の私でさえ、…だと思う）Even as a gambler, I think that strategy blows.
ギャンブラーのあたしから見ても、その作戦はひどいと思うよ。
Even as a ~ は「〜という立場の私でさえ」。自分の立場ならむしろ賛成しそうなのにと前置きして、反対意見を強める型です。
他にも使える例：
Not that this hasn't been ~, but …（〜じゃなかったとは言わないが、…）Not that this hasn't been amusing, but if you're done...
面白くなかったとは言わんが、もう済んだなら……
Not that ~ は「〜というわけではないが」と相手への配慮を前置きする形。皮肉を込めて話を切り上げるときにも使えます。
他にも使える例：
I'd like to, but that's not what's most important to me.（そうしたいが、私にとって一番大事なのはそれではない）I'd like to, but that's not what's most important to me.
そうしたいが、私にとって一番大切なのはそれではない。
I'd like to, but で願望を認めつつ、that's not what's most important to me で自分の優先順位をはっきり示す型です。
