Episode Summary

Spring break winds down. The girls come home from a concert, catch the last night of the cherry blossoms and shiver through it, and puzzle over the goldfish Konata has overfed into something the size of a shogun. Hay fever turns her father into a masked, goggled figure the police would stop on sight. April Fools' Day sends a chain of lies around the group — Konata fools Kagami, Kagami fools her mother, and Konata's father floats a remarriage that isn't happening. A quiz show, a debate about how schools sort their classes, and a plan to visit Miyuki's house fill the rest, and then the new term begins: the four are in the same class again, Yutaka and Minami hunt for the nurse's office, and on Lucky Channel Akira tells Shiraishi he has been dropped from the show.

  • I guess the concert really took it out of you, didn't it?
  • That flight really took it out of me.

it は入れっぱなしで、差し替えないのが型(× take the concert out of you)。

02

get one's hopes up

  • And before you get your hopes up, I didn't win either.
  • Don't get your hopes up — it might rain.

(Don't ~ / before you ~)、hopes

03

not really one's type

  • Uh, you're kidding. You didn't think so? Not really my type, huh?
  • He's nice, but he's not really my type.

  • You're just glad someone's in the same boat as you, aren't you?

  • You can't take new mothers lightly, huh?
  • Don't take this warning lightly.

否定で使うのが基本——can't / shouldn't / don't take ~ lightly の形で「甘く見るな」と言います。

06

be with ~ on that

  • It's definitely Yokogao. I'm with you girls on that one.
  • I'm with you on that — let's wait a week.

on that / on that one I'm with you.

  • I was going to be flying solo on Lucky Channel.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Once you've been a class rep, it's really hard to get people to think of you as being anything else.

PATTERN 2

Are you saying (that) + 主語 + 動詞?(〜ってこと?)

Are you saying if I get married again, you're okay with it?

Do you mean ~?

PATTERN 3

They also separate students depending on who's related to whom.

後ろには名詞か疑問詞節を置きます(depending on the weather / depending on who comes)。It depends on ~ は文の中心になる言い方で、depending on ~ は添え物——役割が違います。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

be in the same boat

We're all in the same boat.(みんな同じ状況だよ)は慰めにも、逃げ場がないという確認にもなります。相手を示すときは as ~——in the same boat as you の形。 (You missed the boat on that deal.)、同じ boat でも意味はつながりませんrock the boat なら「波風を立てる」——船の比喩は三つセットで覚えると混ざりません。
