Episode Summary

Kagami turns up with a new phone, which starts the girls arguing about ringtones and about why everyone's voice changes the moment they pick up. Miyuki explains that her mother is an open book who cannot hide her temper, and the talk drifts through only children versus siblings, why Miyuki walks into doors when she is thinking, and how she came to wear glasses. To mark a year at her part-time job Konata invites everyone to the cosplay café, so Kagami and Miyuki hunt for a manga she wants, get the receipt stamped, and are then bullied through their order by their own waitress. Exam season brings a study session that turns into a long break, and Lucky Channel runs out of budget.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

be an open book

  • You see, my mother is sort of an open book.
  • He's an open book — you always know where you stand.

(My life is an open book.)。

02

do a bang-up job

  • I guess this means that I did a bang up job of raising you, doesn't it?
  • You did a bang-up job on the presentation.

do a good job がふつうのほめ言葉なのに対し、do a bang-up job は思いきりほめている——やや大げさで陽気なのが違い。of ~ing / on ~ で中身を足せます(a bang-up job of raising you)。

03

down to the last ~

  • Down to the last pink hair.
  • She remembered it down to the last detail.

last のうしろには小さいものを置くのが型(the last detail / the last penny / the last crumb)。

04

there is some truth to that

  • Actually, there is some truth to that.
  • There's some truth to what he says, even if he overstates it.

You're right が全面的に認めるのに対し、there is some truth to that は部分的に認める——留保を残しているのが違い。 (There is truth to that.)、some が効いている言い方。to を in にしてもよい(some truth in that)。

05

be deep in thought

  • I'm afraid I was deep in thought and not paying enough attention.
  • She was deep in thought and didn't hear me come in.

06

a goody two-shoes

  • You were, too. That's why you're such a goody two shoes.
  • Don't be such a goody two-shoes.

07

spoil the fun

  • But I wish they'd stop because it's going to spoil the fun for the other users.
  • Don't tell me the ending — you'll spoil the fun.

for ~ で被害者を足せます(spoil the fun for everyone)。

08

be meant to be ~

  • And most of the time it's meant to be a compliment.
  • It was meant to be a joke, not an insult.

(It was meant to be helpful.)。

09

come home to roost

  • Let's see. Curses, like chickens, come home to roost.
  • His shortcuts finally came home to roost.

get what one deserves が当然の報いを言うのに対し、come home to roost は時間をおいて戻ってくる——忘れた頃に効くのが違い。

10

switch gears

  • How come women are able to switch gears so fast?
  • Let's switch gears and talk about the budget.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

You see, there's someone at home whose behavior is, well, slightly older.

人にも物にも使えて物なら of which の代わりになります(a house whose roof is red)。

PATTERN 2

There's a reason why +

There's a reason why the kids today seem so aloof.

(There's a reason he left.)。

PATTERN 3

the only 名詞 + who + 動詞 + is/are …(〜する人だけが…だ)

But the only people who really want to hear something like that are the ones who have changed.

Some people ~ が一部を挙げるのに対し、the only ~ who … 動詞は only のうしろの名詞に合わせます(the only people … are)。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

be an open book

My life is an open book.(私の人生に隠しごとはない)のように人生・過去・顔も主語に立ちます。 紛らわしいのがread someone like a book。 (I can read you like a book.)。be an open book
