Episode Summary

Exam season leaves everyone with the odd feeling of having more free time than usual, right up until the night before. A news report about an otaku suspect sets Konata off about how manga is always the one blamed, and Kagami surprises her by agreeing. It is Konata's birthday: she is pleased mainly because she can now buy mature-rated games, while Yutaka and Minami decorate the house for a party she never comes home to. A careers survey has everyone writing down three choices, and a long argument breaks out over whether light novels count as reading. With their parents away, Kagami is sent out for saffron so Matsuri can make paella, and on Lucky Channel Akira explains the three things every successful anime has in common.

bum ~ out / have ~ in common / be a goner

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

bum ~ out

  • Uh, yeah, I guess it bums me out too.
  • The news really bummed me out.

× bums out me)。

02

be attached to ~

  • You're quite attached to Miyuki chan, aren't you?
  • The kids got attached to the stray cat.

人にも物にも使えます(attached to this old bag)。

03

get mistaken for ~

  • When I go out in my normal clothes, I sometimes get mistaken for an office lady.
  • He often gets mistaken for his brother.

04

give it a shot

  • Here, just give it a shot.
  • I've never skied, but I'll give it a shot.

05

It doesn't count if ~

  • It doesn't count if you have to force yourself to read it.
  • It doesn't count if someone else did it for you.

It's not good if ~ が良し悪しを言うのに対し、It doesn't count if ~ は勘定に入らない——成立そのものを否定するのが違い。

06

have ~ in common

  • There are three things that every successful anime has in common.
  • We have a lot in common.

あいだに量を置きます(have a lot / nothing in common)。with ~ で相手を足せます(in common with him)。

07

pour ~ into …

  • They pour all their love and passion into the show.
  • She poured everything into that project.

put ~ into …

08

be a goner

  • If the characters aren't colored in, the show's a goner.
  • One more mistake and we're goners.

09

absorb ~ from …

  • Sisters tend to absorb certain characteristics from one another.
  • Children absorb habits from the adults around them.

10

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

  • Rule number one is, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
  • They opened their own shop next door — if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

It's funny how + 主語 + 動詞(〜なのが妙だ)

It's funny how during these exam periods, you seem to have more free time than usual.

It's strange that ~ が不思議さを述べるのに対し、It's funny how ~ は語り出しの合図——この先に話が続くのが違い。

PATTERN 2

What + 主語 + 動詞 + is to + 動詞の原形(〜したのは…

What I've done is to select three different schools, which I'd like to attend.

What I've done is to ~ は結論を後ろで立てる——ためが作れるのが違い。What ~ のかたまりが主語なので動詞は is(× are)。

PATTERN 3

It's like when + 主語 + 動詞(〜するときと同じだ)

It's like when you go to one of those revolving sushi places and you put your order in.

It's like ~ が名詞でたとえるのに対し、It's like when ~ は場面ごとたとえる——動きを含められるのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

have ~ in common

だから、a lot / nothing / one thing / three things のように量や数をあいだに置くのが型です。 相手を明示したいときはwith ~——I have nothing in common with him.(彼とは話が合わない)。 (In common with many students, he works part-time.)、have
