Episode Summary
Kagami turns up with a new phone, which starts the girls arguing about ringtones and about why everyone's voice changes the moment they pick up. Miyuki explains that her mother is an open book who cannot hide her temper, and the talk drifts through only children versus siblings, why Miyuki walks into doors when she is thinking, and how she came to wear glasses. To mark a year at her part-time job Konata invites everyone to the cosplay café, so Kagami and Miyuki hunt for a manga she wants, get the receipt stamped, and are then bullied through their order by their own waitress. Exam season brings a study session that turns into a long break, and Lucky Channel runs out of budget.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- You bet I am. I traded in my old cell phone for a new one.
- We traded in our car for a smaller one.
for ~ に新しいほうを置くのが型(trade in the old for the new)。
- Good. It's about time.
- It's about time you got here.
Finally! が素直な安堵なのに対し、It's about time. (It's about time you got here。× you get here)。
- Hey, come on, guys. We have to leave some for Tsukasa, you know?
- Leave some for your brother.
some は数えられるものにも使えます(leave some for me = いくつか残して)。食卓での定番の一言で、Save some for me!
- Just the other day I was warming up a drink in the microwave.
- Let me warm up the soup for you.
目的語は間にも後ろにも置けます(warm it up / warm up the soup)。
- Let's see. I think maybe halfway through elementary school.
- I gave up halfway through the book.
期間にも作業にも使えます(halfway through the year / the movie)。
- Oh, and the games are all free to play and the sweets are all you can eat.
- It's an all-you-can-eat buffet.
飲み放題は all you can drink。
- Have you made up your minds yet?
- I can't make up my mind about the color.
(Have you made up your minds?)。
- I'll be getting off work in a bit.
- What time do you get off work?
work に the は付けません(× get off the work)。get off at ~ と時刻も足せます(I get off at six.)。
- Leave it to me, Yuki, to save the day once again.
- Her spare umbrella saved the day.
(The spare battery saved the day.)。
10
have time on one's hands
- With that kind of time on my hands, I don't want to sit around.
- Now that I'm retired, I have time on my hands.
be free が予定がないことを言うのに対し、have time on one's hands は余っていて持て余す——扱いに困っているのが違い。time の前に量を足せます(too much time on my hands)。on one's hands は「抱えている」という言い方で、厄介ごとにも使えます(a problem on our hands)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
I never knew (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜だなんて知らなかった)
I never knew that doing it like that increases the surface area and lets the flavor soak in.
- I never knew you could cook.(料理できるなんて知らなかった)
- I never knew this place existed.(こんな店があるなんて知らなかった)
PATTERN 2
Typical. She could have at least given me the title to make it easier to find.
at least を足すと不満が出ます(could have at least called)。
- You could have told me.(言ってくれてもよかったのに)
- She could have won if she'd trained.(練習していれば勝てたはずだ)
PATTERN 3
How do you expect ~ to + 動詞の原形?(どうやって〜しろというのか)
How does she expect us to find it with a map like this?
It's impossible. How do you expect ~ to …? 三人称なら does(How does she expect us to ~?)。
- How do you expect me to finish this by noon?(昼までに終えろと?)
- How did they expect us to know?(どうして知っていると思ったんだ)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
make up one's mind
- I can't make up my mind about the color.
- Make up your mind — the train leaves in five minutes.
- She made up her mind to study abroad.
中身は about ~ か to + 動詞の原形で足します(make up my mind about the color / to study abroad)。

見出しはtrade in ~ for … / warm ~ up / all you can eat / make up one's mind / get off work
I never knew (that) + 主語 + 動詞(〜だなんて知らなかった)、could have + 過去分詞(〜してくれてもよかったのに)、How do you expect ~ to + 動詞の原形?(どうやって〜しろというのか)——初めて知る・できたのにと惜しむ・無理を問い返す型が並んでいます。
