Episode Summary
Exam season leaves everyone with the odd feeling of having more free time than usual, right up until the night before. A news report about an otaku suspect sets Konata off about how manga is always the one blamed, and Kagami surprises her by agreeing. It is Konata's birthday: she is pleased mainly because she can now buy mature-rated games, while Yutaka and Minami decorate the house for a party she never comes home to. A careers survey has everyone writing down three choices, and a long argument breaks out over whether light novels count as reading. With their parents away, Kagami is sent out for saffron so Matsuri can make paella, and on Lucky Channel Akira explains the three things every successful anime has in common.
throw ~ a party / hit the wall / right around the corner
🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- Everyone at work is throwing me a birthday party.
- We're throwing her a party on Friday.
throw a party for ~ と言い換えられます。
- Did I make it home in time?
- I barely made it home in time for dinner.
home に to は付けません(× make it to home)。in time for ~ と目的を足せます。
- For my first choice, I put down pre-law.
- Put down your name and address here.
- Whatever. A walk will do me some good, huh?
- A few days off would do you some good.
It won't do any good.
- We could probably get by using some curry powder instead.
- We got by using the old printer for another year.
(We'll get by.)。on ~ / with ~ でも同じ形が作れます(get by on very little)。
- I better keep it down so I don't disturb her.
- Could you keep it down? I'm on a call.
Keep it down!
- Ah, but I was totally set on making something yummy tonight.
- She's set on going to art school.
want to ~ が望むのに対し、be set on ~ing は動かない——もう決めてしまっているのが違い。うしろは動名詞(× set on to make)。dead set on ~ing
- Hey, is it cool if I take a little detour into town with you today?
- We took a detour to avoid the traffic.
little を挟むと軽くなり(a little detour)、誘いやすくなります。
- I feel like I'm hitting the wall.
- I hit the wall around chapter four.
10
right around the corner
- Even though their one year anniversary is right around the corner.
- Summer is right around the corner.
(The station is right around the corner.)。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
We were supposed to go shopping for ingredients.
(You're supposed to knock.=ノックするものだ)。be を落とさないこと(× We supposed to go)。
- I was supposed to call her back.(かけ直すはずだった)
- You're not supposed to eat here.(ここで食べてはいけないことになっている)
PATTERN 2
Just when you think ~, …(〜
Just when you think it's getting too hot, all of a sudden it gets cold.
- Just when you think it's over, it starts again.(終わったと思うとまた始まる)
- Just when I thought I was done, they sent more.(終わったと思った矢先にまた来た)
PATTERN 3
instead of + 動詞ing(〜する代わりに)
Then read the stuff you've got instead of buying something new.
- Let's walk instead of taking a taxi.(タクシーの代わりに歩こう)
- Instead of waiting, I called them.(待つ代わりに電話した)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
hit the wall
- I hit the wall around chapter four.
- Most runners hit the wall at about 30 km.
- If you hit the wall, take a short break.
紛らわしいのがrun into a wall やbe up against the wall。 (We're up against the wall on this deadline.)、止まったのが hit、追い込まれたのが up against——自分が止まったか、外から迫られたかで分けると混ざりません。
