Episode Summary

Konata hands out chocolate wafers she only bought for the toys inside, and the talk turns into a game of deciding what animal everyone would be. Old primary-school journals resurface, full of dream jobs that changed every year. Miyuki explains every remedy for weak eyesight and admits she has tried none of them, and nobody can define what moe actually means. Rain leaves Konata without an umbrella and the sisters sharing one, elections push the evening's shows out of whack, and Kagami wonders whether always bailing Tsukasa out is what keeps her the way she is. Patricia reports on the sacred sites she visited — Akiba and Tokyo — Hiyori explains Otome Road, and Lucky Channel finally introduces the new cast.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

You never know.

  • Dad always told me to keep that stuff because you never know.
  • Take an umbrella — you never know.

Maybe. が可能性を認めるのに対し、You never know.

02

prove one's point

  • Oh, Miki San, you've just proven my point.
  • That reply just proves my point.

my / your / her と持ち主を変えられます。

03

an airhead

  • Tsukasa, the truth is, I was talking about you. You're what they call an airhead.
  • I'm such an airhead — I left my keys inside.

04

lack the courage to + 動詞の原形

  • Oh, the thing is, I lack the courage to go through an ordeal such as that.
  • I lacked the courage to say no.

lack は他動詞なのでof は付けません(× lack of the courage)。

05

get around to ~ing

  • Oh, I guess I just never got around to trying any of it.
  • I finally got around to cleaning the closet.

never got around to ~ing to は前置詞なのでうしろは動名詞(× get around to try)。

06

  • And are you even mature enough to take care of a living being?
  • She's mature enough to handle it herself.

be old enough to ~ が年齢の話なのに対し、mature enough to ~ は中身の話——年ではなく心構えが違い。

07

throw ~ out of whack

  • Besides, elections aren't the only things throwing programs out of whack.
  • The time difference threw my sleep out of whack.

(My schedule is out of whack.)。

08

bail ~ out

  • I mean, if you're always there to bail her out, there's no reason for her to act any different.
  • His parents keep bailing him out.

09

get the wrong impression

  • I guess if they don't know her, they totally get the wrong impression.
  • Don't get the wrong impression — we're just friends.

give ~ the wrong impression

10

It could be worse.

  • It could be worse. You could be one of those people who say being a bride is their dream job.
  • We lost, but it could be worse — nobody got hurt.

It's fine. が問題なしと言うのに対し、It could be worse.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

I never figured + 主語 + would + 動詞の原形(〜するとは思わなかった)

I mean, no offense, Konata, but I never figured you'd be the type to hang on to stuff like that.

PATTERN 2

How can you + 動詞の原形 and not + 動詞の原形?(〜しておいて…

Hold it. How can you use a word and not know what it means?

Why don't you know ~? How can you ~ and not …?

PATTERN 3

What do I know about ~?(〜のことなんて分かるわけがない)

Well, not really. I mean, what do I know about having a dog? I just looked it up, is all.

What do I know about ~? (What do you know about it?=あなたに何が分かる)——その場合はきつく響くので注意。What do I know.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

get around to ~ing

I never got around to it.(結局やらずじまいだった)は、言い訳にも、正直な報告にもなる一言です。 うしろは動名詞になります(× get around to try、○ get around to trying)。紛らわしいのがget around ~(to なし)。

You never know. / prove one's point / lack the courage to ~ / get around to ~ing / bail ~ out

I never figured + 主語 + would + 動詞の原形(〜するとは思わなかった)、How can you + 動詞の原形 and not + 動詞の原形?(〜しておいて…

an airhead / throw ~ out of whack / bail ~ out
