Episode Summary
Konata admits she talks to the dog in her game as if it were real, and Kagami confesses her voice goes high when she addresses her goldfish. A long defence of Gundam fandom follows — knowing every episode by heart is a fan's duty. Tsukasa's plan to stay awake by watching a horror film first backfires badly, homework questions all end up at Miyuki rather than the teacher, and a baseball game running long forces the recorder timer to be reset again. The group decides that clumsy girls are only charming in two dimensions, Hiyori tells the story of a lottery win undone by a flat tyre, and on Lucky Channel Akira sends Shiraishi to fetch water from the forest at the foot of Mt. Fuji.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- I've been watching it since the beginning, so I know 'em all by heart.
- She knows the whole speech by heart.
02
It's one's duty as a ~
- You could say it's my duty as a fan.
- It's my duty as a citizen to vote.
I have to ~ が必要に迫られているのに対し、It's one's duty as a ~ は立場から出てくる義務——誇りが混じるのが違い。
- Although it's not fun if you can't refer to it using a letter.
- People refer to him simply as Doc.
to を落とさないのが型(× refer it)。refer to A as B で「AをBと呼ぶ」。
- And if you can't concentrate, that's when your mind wanders and you start to fantasize.
- My mind wanders during long meetings.
- I don't think I'll ever get sick of your klutziness, Miyuki San.
- I'm getting sick of this song.
be bored with ~ が退屈なのに対し、get sick of ~ はうんざりしている——嫌気の強さが違い。 get は変化、be は状態——I'm sick of it. never get sick of ~ と裏返すとほめ言葉になります。
- Tell us about how you act all clumsy just to score points with your customers.
- He said it to score points with the boss.
07
Truth is stranger than fiction.
- They say that truth is stranger than fiction, I guess.
- Truth is stranger than fiction — nobody would believe this story.
- I shouldn't expect most people to pick up on all the subtle details. I should know better than that.
- You're old enough to know better than that.
know better than to + 動詞の原形 なら「〜するほど馬鹿ではない」。
- How can you be as dense as Konata?
- Don't be as dense as I was at your age.
- Well, let's just say the term is Chinese and leave it at that, shall we?
- We disagree, so let's leave it at that.
Let's leave it at that.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Can you believe (that) + 主語 + 動詞?(〜だなんて信じられる?)
Can you believe that in two years, I'm going to be the same age as Sun?
It's surprising that ~ が自分の感想を述べるのに対し、Can you believe ~? that は省略するのがふつうで、Can you believe it?
- Can you believe it's already August?(もう八月だなんて)
- Can you believe he said that?(あんなこと言うなんて信じられる?)
PATTERN 2
But for someone who claims she doesn't like horror movies, you seem to watch a lot of them regardless.
(For someone who just started, you're good.)。
- For someone who hates sweets, you eat a lot of them.(甘い物嫌いのわりに食べるね)
- For someone who never studies, he does well.(勉強しないわりによくできる)
PATTERN 3
Would it kill ~ to + 動詞の原形?(〜するくらい何でもないだろう)
I mean, would it kill anyone to pick up the pace?
Why don't you ~? が素直な提案なのに対し、Would it kill ~ to …? (Would it kill you to call?)——親しい相手にだけ。
- Would it kill you to say thank you?(お礼くらい言ってもいいでしょ)
- Would it kill them to answer the phone?(電話に出るくらいしてくれても)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
know ~ by heart
- She knows the whole speech by heart.
- I learned the poem by heart in school.
- He knows every line of that film by heart.
面白いのはなぜ heart(心臓)なのか。
