A long defence of Gundam fandom follows — knowing every episode by heart is a fan's duty. Tsukasa's plan to stay awake by watching a horror film first backfires badly, homework questions all end up at Miyuki rather than the teacher, and a baseball game running long forces the recorder timer to be reset again. The group decides that clumsy girls are only charming in two dimensions, Hiyori tells the story of a lottery win undone by a flat tyre, and on Lucky Channel Akira sends Shiraishi to fetch water from the forest at the foot of Mt. Fuji.

01
make it a point to + 動詞の原形
- Whenever I've got an exam, I always make it a point to stay up the night before.
- I make it a point to call my parents on Sundays.
always do ~ が習慣を言うのに対し、make it a point to ~ は意識してそうしている——自分に課しているのが違い。 make a point of ~ing
02
be too scared to + 動詞の原形
- Hey, Miyuki, would you like to watch this movie with me tonight? I'm too scared to watch it alone.
- He was too scared to look down.
too ~ to … は否定の意味を含むので、not は要りません(× too scared not to watch)。
- Again. Geez. Now I got to reset the timer on the recorder.
- Reset the timer and try again.
- I'm stuck on that one too. And I was going to keep at it.
- Keep at it — you're almost there.
Keep at it!
- It's better I stay off the computer and just hit the sack.
- I'm beat — I'm going to hit the sack.
- I can't believe I'm making sleep a priority.
- This year I'm making my health a priority.
make ~ a top priority
- While I was reading my book, I missed my station again.
- I fell asleep and missed my station.
get off at the wrong station one's を入れるのが型(my / your station)。
- But on the way to school, my bike got a flat.
- We got a flat on the highway.
a flat は a flat tire の略で、アメリカでよく使われます(イギリスは a puncture)。have a flat でも通じます。
09
put one's name on the list
- Anytime I have to put my name on a waiting list, I write down the name of one of my favorite characters.
- Put your name on the list and they'll call you.
wait in line が並んで待つのに対し、put one's name on the list は書いて待つ——その場を離れられるのが違い。on を落とさないのが型(× put my name in the list)。
10
have too much faith in ~
- No way. She's got too much faith in me.
- You have too much faith in that old car.
trust ~ が信じるのに対し、have too much faith in ~ は信じすぎ——裏切る心配をしているのが違い。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Aren't we lucky that + 主語 + 動詞?(〜なんて運がいいよね)
Hey, aren't we lucky that both of us know people who are seniors?
We're lucky that ~ が言い切るのに対し、Aren't we lucky ~?
- Aren't we lucky the rain stopped?(雨がやんで運がよかったね)
- Aren't you lucky you booked early?(早く予約しておいてよかったね)
PATTERN 2
Hey, Miyuki San, sorry to bug you, but I don't get any of the names of these eras.
Excuse me. (Sorry to bother / interrupt / bug you)。
- Sorry to interrupt, but the taxi's here.(お話中すみません、タクシーが来ました)
- Sorry to ask again, but could you resend it?(またで悪いけど送り直してもらえる?)
PATTERN 3
You never can tell. Perhaps you'll even be taller than me someday.
- Perhaps we'll see you next year.(また来年お会いできるかもしれません)
- Perhaps it will clear up by noon.(昼までには晴れるかもしれません)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
keep at it
- Keep at it — you're almost there.
- She kept at it until the code finally ran.
- If you keep at it, it gets easier.
it は「いま取り組んでいること」を漠然と指すので、keep at the homework とは言いません(言うなら keep working on the homework)。 紛らわしいのがkeep it up。 (Keep it up! You're doing great.)、うまくいっている相手に言う言葉です。keep at it は苦戦中、keep it up は好調——相手の状況で選ぶと混ざりません。
